Florida Gators center Rueben Chinyelu is playing in his sophomore season after joining the team in 2024 after beginning his collegiate career with the Washington State Cougars in 2023. As a freshman, he averaged 4.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game. In the current season, Chinyelu is averaging 6.0 points, 6.6 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game.

The 21-year-old went to the NBA Academy Africa in Saly, Senegal and led the team to a first-spot finish in the 2022 NBA Academy games. Chinyelu also participated in the Basketball Africa League (BAL) for Mozambique’s CFV. He was a part of the team which finished third at the 2019 FIBA U16 African Championship.

In the Sweet 16 clash of 2025 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament against Maryland, he posted 10 points and eight rebounds. He finished with six points against Connecticut and Norfolk.

Who Are Rueben Chinyelu’s Parents?

Rueben Chinyelu was brought up by his mother, Patricia Chinyelu, following the death of his father when he was just six. He has three older sisters, and while growing up, Reuben Chinyelu didn’t dream of becoming an athlete, but a doctor.

His grandmother, Allison brought him into the game by taking him to join Raptors Basketball Academy in 2024. Despite having no prior experience, Rueben went on to leave an immediate impression on his new coach Charles Ibeziakor.
