Rangers will host La Liga side Athletic Club in the UEFA Europa League Quarter-final leg 1 today. The Scottish side who come in after a defeat against Hibernian last week will have their plates full given the form Athletic Club is in. The Spanish side who has lost two games since February will prove as a strong test for the Rangers.

With players like Oihan Sancet and Nico Williams made for the big occasions, Rangers will need solid discipline to get through this contest. Moreover, making sure they take advantage with them to Bilbao will also be termed important for their semifinal hopes. Athletic Club has lost only one home game this season displaying their dominance at the San Mamés Stadium.

Manager Barry Ferguson addressed that he will not be afraid to rotate the squad if needed. Talking about how every position is up for grabs in his team, Ferguson insisted on earning a spot. Addressing the important decisions he might have to make, Ferguson insisted his pre-match conference said:

“I have told everybody now that their place is up for grabs, when you go into my team, and you play you need to earn your right to play in the team.

“I probably will have to make some difficult decisions going forward. I have had to make some difficult decisions since I have come into the job, but it is one thing I am not afraid to do to try and better the team.”

Realising the challenge ahead of him, Ferguson termed Athletic Club as favourites coming into the competition. Speaking on his assessment of the Spanish side, the Manager added:

“I would probably say they are the favourites for the competition, so we know it is a tough ask for us, but these are the games as a footballer, coaching staff, and as a manager, that you want to be involved in.”

“In my opinion, they have got quality all over the team, certainly in the wide areas, the two Williams brothers, they are going to be a real handful. I look at the midfield, technically they are very good and very hard working and defensively really solid, so we know that we have to be at the top of our game to try and get a result.”

Rangers will try to stick to their 4-2-3-1 without leaving many loopholes in the back. While they will have an important task of gaining an advantage, leaving too much space behind for the Athletic Club could backfire very quickly for them.
