Jaylen Reed was selected by the Houston Texans as the 187th pick in the 6th round of the 2025 NFL Draft. According to reports, Reed wanted to be a Texan and his wishes ultimately came true, coming into the NFL. Penn State’s safety said “It’s the team that I always wanted to go to since I started the process, and I said something about them at the combine. I told the coach it would be a blessing just to have the opportunity to play for them.”

Reed spent all four years of his college football career at Penn State. In his true freshman season, Reed played in just 8 games and had 6 combined tackles. The following season in 2022, his sophomore season, Reed played in 13 games and notched 31 total tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and defended 3 passes, showing significant improvement from his rookie season. In 2023, his junior year, Reed showed further improvement, putting up 46 total tackles, 4 tackles for loss, and had two interceptions. The final year of his collegiate season, Reed had a break out year, as he notched 98 combined tackles (51 solo), 7 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, 3 interceptions, a interception return touchdown, and a forced fumble.

He has good size and production for a two-year starter and he plays with natural instinct and ball awareness. However, he can be inconsistent when it comes to finding where he needs to be in coverage. According to his draft profile, many scouts believe that he should play as a backup safety for downhill zone coverages.
