Every season there’s a lot of anticipation for the NFL MVP award. In the past we’ve seen great players win the award such as Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, and many more. Each season brings its own excitement. While some players will repeatedly be in the MVP conversation every season, there are times where a surprise entry makes the list.

The MVP awards usually go to quarterbacks and understandably so. Quarterback run the offense in almost every possession and they are usually the ones who decide how far the team goes. This is not to discredit the defense or the other offensive positions, but, the that is how it is in the NFL. However, there have been some anomalies in the past.

Adrian Peterson, former running back for the Vikings, won the MVP award in 2012. Linebacker Lawrence Taylor won the MVP award in 1986 and Placekicker, Mark Moseley won the Most Valuable Player in 1982.

Outside of quarterbacks, there have been 13 running backs who have won the MVP award in the Super Bowl era. Apart from running backs, a linebacker (1), a placekicker (1), and a defensive tackle (1), have won the MVP award. Out of 59 MVP awards handed out, quarterbacks have won the award 43 times.

This season, the top MVPs contenders are obviously quarterbacks again. However, we also have a running back in the mix of things. So who has the best chance of winning the 2024 MVP award? Let’s find out.

Picks for NFL MVP honors will be announced on February 6th, 2025, which will air live at 9:00 pm ET on FOX. Snoop Dogg is set to host the MVP ceremony from the Saenger Theater in New Orleans.

Who Are The Top Contenders For NFL MVP Honors This Season?

The top contenders for the NFL MVP honors are as follow;

Josh Allen

Allen has had an excellent season with 3731 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, and only 6 interceptions thrown. His numbers were down this season compared to his previous 4. However, Allen was efficient at what he did and helped his team to a 13-4 regular season record. They were the first team to stop the ‘Chiefs Juggernaut’ in the regular season!

Lamar Jackson

It is not even a surprise anymore. Lamar Jackson had his best season so far, throwing over 4000 yards and 41 overall touchdowns. He is the winner of the 2023 MVP award and could win second straight MVP. He already has two most valuable player awards in his kitty.

Saquon Barkley

Saquon Barkley, the running back for the Eagles, just had one of the best seasons in the history of the NFL. He notched 2005 yards (career best) and 13 touchdowns. If he wins the Super Bowl for the Eagles, Barkley’s stellar season might be considered the best amongst all RBs in the history of the NFL.

Jared Goff

Goff also had an outstanding run in the regular season with 4629 passing yards, and 37 passing touchdowns. He led the Lions to the number one seed in the NFC with a 15-2 record. The loss to the Washington Commanders ended their hopes for the Super Bowl but the Lions were one of the best offensive units this season, for which Jared Goff does deserve recognition.

Joe Burrow

Joey B was on a mission this season and threw for 4918 passing yards, and 43 touchdowns. However, a 9-8 record on his end, will not help his case. The Bengals need to make huge change in their defense because Joe Burrow is starting to hit the peak of his prime!
