The first game of the NFL Wildcard Weekend will be a battle of two top defenses!

The LA Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh and Justin Herbert will enter the NRG Stadium with one goal in mind. And that goal would be to get the first postseason win for the Chargers since 2018.

Herbert played a wildcard game for the Chargers in 2022 where they lost to the Jaguars 30-31. The younger Harbaugh brother will coach in his first postseason game since the 2013 season where he coached the 49ers.

But tonight, the Los Angeles Chargers will be up against a team with a top 10 overall defense. It won’t be smooth sailing by any means as we are in the postseason now. So, who do the Chargers play today and where can you watch the Chargers game? Time for a quick preview for the Chargers game today!

Who do the Chargers play today?

The Los Angeles Chargers take on the Houston Texans in the first game of the NFL Wildcard weekend. It will be one of the Saturday wildcard games scheduled for today.

Justin Herbert and co. finished the 2024 regular season with a decent 11-6 record. They were second in the AFC West, behind the Kansas City Chiefs (15-2). Jim Harbaugh’s lads are seeded 5th and will face the 4th seeded Texans tonight.

This will be the first wildcard/postseason appearance for Jim Harbaugh since the 2013-14 season NFL Championship loss to the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks went to win that season’s Super Bowl championship with QB Russell Wilson, who also features in the second wildcard game of the day!

The Chargers ranked 11th in overall defense this season while being placed 20th in overall offense. C.J. Stroud and co. aren’t that far in terms of overall offense as they ranked 22nd with 319.7 average offensive yards per game as compared to the Chargers’ 324.2 average.

Even though the Texans rank higher in overall defense, they have allowed 42 touchdowns this season as compared to the Chargers’ 31! Los Angeles will rely on Justin Herbert’s precision as he has thrown for 3,870 yards in the regular season for 23 touchdowns with just 3 interceptions, which is the least for any QB this season!

As for C.J. Stroud, he has had a significantly rougher sophomore year as compared to his rookie outing. The Texans QB1 has 20 touchdowns for 3,727 yards but has been picked 12 times this season. But Stroud has a 1-1 playoffs record as compared to Herbert’s 0-1 postseason record.

Both of these teams are not an offensive menace by any means. Hence it might come down to the defense. We don’t expect a high scoring game but some defensive prowess might be on display for this one!
