Las Vegas Aces wrapped up the regular season with a convincing 103-75 win and extended their regular season winning streak to 16 matches. The franchise also moved to second in the WNBA standings and will now lock horns against the Seattle Storm in the first round of the playoffs on Sep. 14. Las Vegas have not dropped a game since the defeat against Minnesota on Aug. 02.

Before starting the winning streak, the Aces were 14-14 on the regular season and finished the season with a 30-14 record. During this period, they have beaten some title contenders like the Lynx, Liberty, and Mercury. Vegas is being led by their stars Chelsea Gray, Jackie Young, and 3-time WNBA MVP, A’ja Wilson — who set a record for most 30+ point games this season.

The longest winning streak in WNBA history belongs to the 2001 Los Angeles Sparks, who had 18 consecutive regular-season victories on their way to the franchise’s first championship. Led by league MVP Lisa Leslie, the Sparks finished the regular season with a league-best 28-4 record and capped their dominant year by defeating Dawn Staley and the Charlotte Sting in the WNBA Finals. Leslie was named Finals MVP.

Los Angeles’ path to history was not without challenges. In June, the Sparks suffered a three-game loss during a road trip, losing on back-to-back nights to Houston and Cleveland before falling by 13 points to the New York Liberty. Two nights later, they rebounded with a win that sparked their record-setting streak. That run remains unmatched in the league’s regular-season record books.

After their midseason slump, they did not lose again in the regular season, entering the playoffs with momentum and carrying it through to the title. The 18-game streak still stands above other notable runs. Aces tied with the Phoenix Mercury (2014) for the second-longest winning streaks in the WNBA history. The 1998 Houston Comets’ 15-game streak comes third in the tally.

In the postseason, the Sparks’ success extended beyond 2001. Across the 2001 and 2002 playoffs, Los Angeles won nine consecutive postseason games, tying the mark later matched by the 2013–14 Minnesota Lynx. Other playoff streaks have come close, such as the 2022–23 Las Vegas Aces, 2010–11 Seattle Storm, and 2008–09 Detroit Shock each posted eight straight postseason wins, but none have surpassed the Sparks’ and Lynx’s shared record.
