Korda’s US Open ended in disappointment as back and hip pain forced him to retire.
Sebastian Korda’s US Open run came to an abrupt end on Court 17 on Monday, as the 25-year-old American was forced to retire with a lower back and hip injury while trailing Cameron Norrie 7-5, 6-4 in the first round. The decision handed Norrie a place in the round of 64 at Flushing Meadows for the sixth time in his career, extending the Briton’s hopes of rebuilding momentum after a difficult stretch of form.

The match began with intensity, both men trading early blows. At 4-4 in the opening set, Korda fended off three break points, but Norrie struck on his next chance, sealing the opener with a surge of confidence. The American looked hampered from the outset of the second set, calling for the trainer to treat his back after his serve was broken again. Though he tried to push through, Korda’s movement appeared increasingly restricted, and after dropping the second set, he ended the contest, leaving Norrie to roar toward his box.
For Norrie, the victory was timely. Ranked No. 35, the Brit arrived in New York on a three-match losing streak and still finding his footing after a Wimbledon quarterfinal run. Last year, an arm injury had ruled him out of the Open altogether, but this time he steadied himself against a familiar opponent he had lost to in three of their four previous meetings.

For Korda, however, it was a grimly familiar story. Once considered among the brightest of the young American prospects, his progress has been repeatedly stalled by injuries. He had only just returned to tour action last week after nearly three months out with a shin stress fracture. Monday’s retirement underscored his fragile fitness, as he hung his head in frustration at yet another physical setback.

Hopefully he gets the rest he needs and is back in full force for the U.S. swing.

The result sets up Norrie for a second-round clash against either Francisco Comesana or Alex Michelsen, while Korda faces more uncertainty about his fitness. For a player who spent last year inside the world’s top 20, it’s a painful reminder that talent alone cannot outpace relentless injury troubles, especially for athletes.

My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
