The New Orleans Saints had a disappointing 2024-2025 season, finishing with a 5-12 record, their worst since 2005, and placing last in the NFC South. They started 2-0, scoring over 40 points in each game, but then they went on a seven game losing streak, which was hard to watch. After a humiliating defeat to the Carolina Panthers, head coach Dennis Allen was fired, and their interim coach Darren Rizzi helped his team go 3-5 after the firing.

The Saints missed the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year, with a notable shutout loss against the Green Bay Packers. The team hasn’t been the same, ever since Drew Brees retired. It’s been five years since his last season, and the Saints still haven’t recovered. The Team’s struggles were compounded by injuries, including to their quarterback Derek Carr, and a lack of offensive and defensive consistency. However, on the bright side, the Saints did hire Kellen Moore as their head coach, who won the Super Bowl with the Eagles this season. And the Question to be answered is, if Moore can change the Saints’ losing ways and turn the franchise around.

The Saints hired Kellen Moore as their head coach, but that alone will not change the current condition of the Saints. They have 9 picks in the 2025 NFL Draft, and the 9th overall pick in the first round. The Saints have a lot of needs, and while they fix all of their problems in a single draft, they can try to acquire a quarterback, better offensive line, receivers, and cornerbacks, to improve their record next season.

Positional Needs for the Saints

With nine picks, including No. 9 overall, new head coach Kellen Moore and GM Mickey Loomis must prioritize immediate impact players and long-term solutions. Here are some of their top positional needs;

After trading away Marshon Lattimore and losing Paulson Adebo to the free agency, the cornerback spot for the Saints looks very weak currently. While the Saints still have Alontae Taylor and Kool-Aid McKinstry are promising, but they still haven’t found their game yet. The Saints could draft a corner to fill out the void.

Their offensive line could use some reinforcements, especially since Trevor Penning is still quite inexperienced and is struggling with his performance, and Ryan Ramczyk’s retirement from the NFL, generates questions for the Saints going forward. A versatile lineman could solidify the position more, protecting Derek Carr or a future quarterback.

The Saints could also draft a quarterback from this year’s draft class. While Carr is still with the Saints for the 2025 season, there are still no updates about his should injury, and when he could return to a hundred percent. Their backups went 0-7 without Carr last season, which should be enough of a reason to aim for a quarterback in the draft.
