The Minnesota Vikings had a surprisingly good 2024 season, considering all the developments that took place at the quarterback position. Deciding to move on from former QB Kirk Cousins, the Vikings brought in Sam Darnold and drafted J.J. McCarthy with the number 10 overall pick. The initial plan was to have McCarthy be the starting quarterback with Darnold as the backup. However, McCarthy’s injury, even before the season began, meant Darnold became the starter for the entire season.

Prior to the start of the campaign, it felt as if Minnesota would struggle, especially within their division with the Lions and Packers looking like clear favorites. The Bears had also had a great offseason, but Kevin O’Connell’s team was not to be outdone. As a matter of fact, the NFC North division standings for the top spot were decided in the final regular season game, where the Vikings relinquished the top spot after a loss to the Lions.

Having said that, after going 14-3 on the year and looking in great form, Minnesota’s postseason came to an end rather quickly as they fell 27-9 to the Los Angeles Rams. Heading into the next season, the Vikings remain competent, but the focus will now shift to McCarthy and whether or not he will be able to steer this team to greater heights.

The Vikings head into this draft with just 4 picks through the seven-round draft. They will be selecting once in rounds 1,3,5, and 6. Their first-round selection comes at number 24 overall. With only four picks overall and their first-round selection near the end, the Vikings do not have many opportunities to trade down for further draft capital.

In short, there is not much for the Vikings to focus on, so it is essential they take care of their key positions when they get the chance to do so.

Positional Needs for the Vikings from the 2025 NFL Draft

Despite having only 4 picks in this year’s draft, the good news for Vikings fans is that the team has already addressed its most important needs in free agency. Having said that, the cornerback position is one that could be looked at in this draft.

Furthermore, Minnesota could also look at a left guard, as that is one area that could be strengthened. Not much is required for Minnesota at this point as they have a well-balanced roster, and with a limited number of picks, there is only so much they can do.
