The Panthers are in dire need of defensive improvements from the draft!
The last time the Carolina Panthers made it to the playoffs was back in 2017; that was seven seasons ago, and since then, they have had a losing record every year despite being in one of the more open divisions in the league. Trading up for the number one overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft, the Panthers drafted former Alabama quarterback Bryce Young in the hope of finding their future franchise signal caller.
Sadly, though, the Panthers gave up a lot of draft capital, and they haven’t been able to put together a roster capable of helping Young progress at a quicker rate at the highest level of the sport. The former Crimson Tide QB has struggled mightily throughout his two years in the league and was even benched early in the 2024 season for Andy Dalton. However, with three more wins than 2023, Carolina has reason for hope.
The upcoming draft will be of utmost importance for the Panthers, who missed out on what would have been a number one overall pick last year due to their trade with the Bears when they drafted Young. Drafting quality talent in the first couple of rounds at positions of need will be crucial for the Panthers’ upcoming season.
This year, the Panthers have a total of 9 draft picks with three of them inside the top 75. Carolina will be selecting in all rounds apart from round 6. They have the most selections in round 5, while their first round pick is number 8 overall.

The Panthers, who have spent the last couple of seasons trying to put together an offense, are in desperate need of looking at the defensive side of the ball in this draft. A pass rusher in the first round may be the best way to go, given that there are plenty of quality ones this year and with the number 8 overall pick, Carolina can surely draft a top talent on the edge.
Georgia Bulldogs Jalon Walker has been linked with the Panthers as their potential first-round pick. Other areas Carolina should look to improve in the draft are the defensive interior and their secondary, which includes both safety and corner. While the Panthers have extended Jaycee Horn at cornerback, more depth is required.
On offense, Carolina needs to find another weapon in the wide receiver room with Adam Thielen nearing 35 years of age. Drafting a solid receiver with an eye on the future, as well as one who can provide help this season is the need of the hour in Carolina.
nfl I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
