“We Have the Talent To Be the Best Team That We’ve Had” – Patrick Mahomes Radiates Optimism As Chiefs Look To Make It to Four Straight Super Bowls

The Kansas City Chiefs are currently holding training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, which is where ‘Up & Adams’ host Kay Adams spent time recently interviewing some of the players. With week 1 of preseason already in the bag, the new season is just around the corner, and Chiefs’ players are upbeat about their chances for 2025-26.

Kansas City has made it to three consecutive Super Bowls, winning two in a row in 2023 and 2024, but last season’s debacle at the hands of the Eagles showed this team, too, has its weaknesses.

That said, the offseason has undergone some roster changes, and as the players get ready for regular season action, there is a sense of excitement once again.

Super Bowl Loss and Focus on the Future

With the Chiefs aiming to become the first team in the NFL’s Super Bowl era to three-peat last season, the loss in Super Bowl LIX was a tough pill to swallow for the players and the Chiefs’ Kingdom as a whole. That said, the team has put all that behind them and is completely focused on the task at hand.

In fact, cornerback Trent McDuffie even spoke about how the team has moved on from the Super Bowl loss and that nobody has mentioned it even once since the start of OTAs and mandatory minicamp.

“I feel like when we got back to OTAs, and kind of just seen everybody just their mind state of like it was already washed away, like it was already out of their mind. You can’t change it. The past is the past. There’s nothing we can talk about today that’s going to change anything that happened. So, it’s a new year. You know, it’s a new team, new goals, new accomplishments.”

Mahomes Believes This Could Be the Best Chiefs Team

The Chiefs’ training camp is seeing plenty of deep balls as Coach Reid is calling on his trusted quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, to give his wide receivers chances at making the big plays.

Kansas City’s offense has lacked the deep ball threat ever since the departure of Tyreek Hill, but with receivers such as Xavier Worthy and Marquise Brown, there is great potential. At the same time, Mahomes was quick to point out that players such as Worthy, Rashee Rice, Travis Kelce, Noah Gray, among others, are all making plays which has been exciting.

Moreover, Mahomes also credited the Chiefs’ defense as being one of the best in the league. When asked whether he thinks this team could be the best team he’s had with the Chiefs, Mahomes said the team has the talent to be the best, but they need to go out and prove it.

“I think we have a chance to be. We have the talent to be the best team that we have. But, you got to go out there and prove it. And until we prove it, I’m not going to say we’re the best, but if we go out there and win that Super Bowl, then we can say we’re the best one.”

Is Rookie Josh Simmons the Answer to the Chiefs’ Left Tackle Problem?

One of the major concerns for the Chiefs heading into this offseason was the lack of quality play at the left tackle position. While KC looked for makeshift options throughout the 2024 season, this weakness was completely exposed by Philadelphia in the Super Bowl.

To address this issue, the Chiefs drafted offensive tackle Josh Simmons with their first-round selection, and by the sound of things, he has been doing a fine job at training camp thus far.

“He’s just a dog at the end of the day. He’s obviously working through, like being an NFL pro and being a veteran, but when it comes to just pass blocking and run blocking, he can get the job done. And that’s where it all starts off at,” said Mahomes.

Mahomes then also added, “He’s getting tested out here by Spags and the defensive line that we have. And I think it’s just you hear the defensive guys talk about him, and they all are saying the right things. And so, the sky is the limit. He has a chance to be one of the best there is at that left tackle position.”

But if that was not all, defensive tackle Chris Jones, a stalwart of the Chiefs’ defense, also praised the youngster, calling him hungry for success.

“He’s a young, hungry kid. He’s ferocious. Threw a couple of our guys on the ground, you know, punked him out. But yeah, I like the kid. I like him a lot.”

Overall, the mood at the Chiefs’ training camp is light and fun, but at the same time, the team is putting in the hard work, which matters the most. The Chiefs are considered somewhat of a dynasty of modern-day football, but the hunger to win more never dies, and that is what they will be aiming for once again.
