Liverpool suffered a surprising defeat to Crystal Palace in the Community Shield final on Sunday. After taking an early lead through Hugo Ekitike, the Reds let Palace come from behind twice as the game went to penalties 2-2.

Merseyside captain Virgil Van Dijk had an awkward day on the field in terms of his standards. However, what truly disappointed Van Dijk was the behaviour of the fans during the kickoff. Despite both sets of fans being asked to remain silent as a gesture of respect for the late Liverpool striker Jota and his younger sibling.

Van Dijk’s Disappointment Over Fan Behaviour During Minute’s Silence for Jota

Even after the minutes’ silence requested, some noise continued at Wembley. With some saying Palace fans were not aware of the request, Liverpool players and manager have shared their views. Talking about the incident, Liverpool captain Van Dijk according to the Daily Mail said:

‘Yes, I am disappointed, said Van Dijk. ‘That is the only thing I can say. I don’t know who did it but plenty were trying to shush it down so obviously that doesn’t help it.

‘But it is what it is. You can’t control how many fans were here? Was it 80,000 people? So it’s disappointing to hear that but if that person or those persons can go home and be happy with themselves, then…’

Manager Arne Slot also shared some views on the incident as he said: “ I don’t think this was planned. Maybe they weren’t aware that it was a minute of silence. Then the fans of Palace were trying to calm that person or those persons down.”

‘So I don’t think there is a bad intention to it because the fans of Crystal Palace and fans around the world have paid huge respect to Diogo and Andre. We will see on Friday when Bournemouth come to Anfield just how respectful that will be”

Palace fans on social media expressed disappointment and apology reflecting on the incident. Five Year Plan, a Palace fanzine and podcast also issued an apology on behalf of its supporters on X.

Van Dijk Calls for Liverpool’s Attack Strenthening

Virgil van Dijk also reflected on the recent departures of key players like Darwin Núñez and Luis Díaz. Speaking to the media, Van Dijk acknowledged the impact of these losses and emphasised the need for the team to reinforce its attacking options as the transfer window progresses as he said,

“Well we lost Darwin, he went to Saudi and we lost Lucho [Luis Diaz], he went to Bayern. I think there’s always room for an attacker to strengthen us so let’s see what the window brings in terms of the balance of the team.”

The urge by the Dutchman to strengthen their attack is said to be a message to sign Alexander Isak. Liverpool after a few failed bids for the Swedish striker is still said to be in talks with Newcastle to sign Isak.
