Top seed Jannik Sinner advanced to the Vienna Open 2025 quarterfinals after defeating compatriot Flavio Cobolli 6-2, 7-6(4) on Thursday, extending his perfect record against Italians to 17-0. The 24-year-old, who also breezed past Daniel Altmaier in just 58 minutes in the first round, will now face Alexander Bublik in their fourth meeting this season.

The Kazakh is the only player besides Carlos Alcaraz since August 2024 to have upset Sinner in a completed match, doing so at Halle in June. This comeback win was also Sinner’s sole early exit when healthy. Considering Bublik’s threat, Sinner enters the clash in clinical form, having won his last 18 indoor matches and boasting a 91.6% winning rate in service games on hard courts this season. He lifted the Vienna trophy in 2023 and boasts a 14-4 record in the tournament overall. But can Bublik flip the script?

Bublik’s Upset Potential vs. Sinner’s Indoor Dominance

Sinner holds a 5-2 lead over Bublik, including a 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 thrashing at the US Open as revenge for the Halle upset. This season, Sinner has been nearly unstoppable when healthy, claiming titles in Melbourne, Wimbledon, and Beijing, and reaching finals in Rome, Roland Garros, Cincinnati, and the US Open, with the Halle loss the only blemish. Bublik, meanwhile, has had a rollercoaster year on hard courts, posting a 12-12 record but finding form with four titles in 2025, being Halle, Gstaad, Kitzbühel, and Hangzhou. Riding a career-high ranking of No. 16, the Kazakh has also made quarterfinals in Roland Garros and Open Occitanie and a fourth-round run in the US Open. In Vienna, he dispatched Alejandro Tabilo and Francisco Cerundolo in straight sets. Bublik has fired 576 aces this season, winning 78% of first-serve points but only 19.2% of return games, converting 39% of 286 break points.

Alexander Bublik was considered nothing but a meme player less than 12 months ago.

This year, he's won the second most professional singles titles of any man in tennis.

While Sinner’s consistency, tactical acumen, and dominance in indoor hard-court conditions make him the clear favorite, Bublik’s explosive serve and unpredictable shotmaking mean he cannot be underestimated. A few clean games from the Kazakh, combined with a fast start, could put pressure on the Italian and create an upset scenario. Yet history suggests Sinner will likely control rallies, punish loose errors, and dictate the pace. Fans can expect Bublik to threaten sparks of brilliance, but Sinner’s form and confidence make him the probable victor in another commanding indoor display.
