Utah’s Dylan Guenther Out Indefinitely with Lower-Body Injury

Forward Josh Doan Recalled from AHL Tucson as Guenther’s Absence Impacts Utah’s Power Play and Wild-Card Standings Hopes

Utah Hockey Club standout forward Dylan Guenther will be sidelined indefinitely due to a lower-body injury, according to a team statement. The team announced that forward Josh Doan has been recalled from AHL Tucson as part of a related transaction.

Guenther, 21, did not skip a shift in Utah’s most recent game, a 4-1 defeat against the Panthers on Wednesday. Regardless of the injury, it now appears to sideline him for several weeks as Utah aims to gain traction in the Western Conference wild-card standings.

In their initial 40 matches in Salt Lake City, Guenther stands as Utah’s top goal scorer with 16. He has contributed 18 assists for a total of 34 points, aiming for a career-best 70 throughout the entire season and ranking third on the team in total scoring.

To this point, he’s experienced the season Utah anticipated after signing him to an eight-year, $57.14MM extension at the start of training camp. At the time, many considered it a risk since Guenther had only accumulated 50 points in 78 NHL games with the Coyotes, who selected him ninth overall in the 2021 draft. However, securing him early to prevent higher costs for his services later seems to be a wise decision by general manager Bill Armstrong thus far.

Guenther’s lack of presence will be notably missed during the power play, as he tops the team in goals with seven. He also tops Utah in total shot attempts (237) and has averaged 16:16 per game, ranking fourth among forwards behind captain Clayton Keller, Nick Schmaltz, and fellow young talent Logan Cooley.

Utah has performed above average by various measures, managing 53% of shot attempts and 52.5% of scoring opportunities at even strength while also showcasing impressive special teams statistics.
