The big stars came out swinging on the second day of the 2025 US Open. Mirra Andreevan continued to show why she remains tennis’ premier young talent after her explosive start in the tournament. However, she wasn’t alone as Carlos Alcaraz debuted a new look during his chase of the first-ever US Open glory. Then there was Karen Khachanov, who finally erased the memories of 2023 and 2024 and started him US Open campaign with a win.

So after an exciting day 1, here are the key highlights of the 2025 US Open’s day 2.

Mirra Andreeva Destroys Alycia Parks to Advance to US Open Round 2

Alycia Parks may have hoped to transform her recent good form into a deep US Open run. However, on this fateful day, she fell to the sublime quality of Mirra Andreeva. In a match that never really became competitive, Andreeva annihilated Parks 6-0, 6-1 in just 55 minutes. While one cannot underrate Andreeva’s quality, Parks, too, wasn’t at her best. The player known for her strong serves strangely never found a rhythm.

After the game, Andreeva admitted to feeling nervous before the sport. “I was super nervous before coming into this match,” Andreeva admitted. “I saw her last results, and she has been playing super great. It’s always very hard to start a Grand Slam; first-round matches are super tricky. So, I was just trying to tell myself to be confident to go for my shots, not to rush, but at the same time play aggressive.”

To say she was aggressive would be an understatement. However, while Andreeva scored big, there was Alcaraz, who gained attention for a different reason.

Carlos Alcaraz Advances As His New Look Becomes Talk of the Town

There were audible gasps from the crowd after Carlos Alcaraz stepped into the court. No, it wasn’t because of his shots; this time, it was because of his choice. The 5-time Grand Slam champion debuted a new buzz cut look that, well, didn’t really get a unanimously positive response. For instance, the American star Frances Tiafoe playfully called Alcaraz’s new look “Horrible.” However, while Alcaraz’s look may have attracted a divided opinion, his play surely didn’t.

Alcaraz defeated Reilly Opelka 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 in a rather business-like display. “Today was a really difficult one against a really great player,” said Alcaraz after the match. Later, the 22-year-old admitted that he couldn’t really find any rhythm against Opelka’s serve. However, he did come through when he needed it the most. So the buzz cut version of Alcaraz has advanced to the 2nd round. Could this new haircut prove to be a good luck charm and give Alcaraz his first-ever US Open title? That’ll be seen. But at least one other losing streak came to an end today.

Karen Khachanov Survives Early Scare to Reach His First US Open Round 2 In Two Years

Nishesh Basavareddy may have given Karen Khachanov a flashback to the past two years after winning the first set. Khachanov hadn’t been able to cross the first round of the US Open since reaching the semi-finals in 2022. So the first round loss not only highlighted Basavareddy’s potential but also revealed a significant mental blockage for Khachanov. However, Khachanov was in no mood to have a trifecta of first-round exits.

The No.9 seed mounted a comeback to defeat the 20-year-old 6-7, 6-3, 7-5, 6-1. While Khachanov gained momentum, it was surprising to see Basavareddy fade after a bright start. However, it is the 20-year-old’s first year as a pro on the circuit. So one can imagine how his inexperience may have caused him a few points, especially in front of an experienced hand like Khachanov. Certainly, Basavareddy remains a player to watch out for next year.

So as it stands, day 2 of the US Open came with some memorable moments. The event is just getting started, and there are already multiple memorable moments to talk about. With players like Jannik Sinner in action for Day 3, wonder what else we have in store for us!
