USA continues to shine in the 2025 US Open; however, the shocking exit of Madison Keys may have dampened the spirits. Multiple Americans came onto the court to test their might on day 2 of the event. Many won, many dominated, and then the grandeur of the event got the better of two stars. One (Keys) was coming off her career year, and another (Venus Williams) was hanging on for one last glory. So without further ado, here’s how the Americans did on day 2 of the US Open.

Madison Keys and Venus Williams Collapse After Highly Competitive Matches

Odds were already stacked against Venus Williams, who stepped into her first US Open since 2023. Moreover, this was part of her comeback tour after missing 16 months of her career due to pain from uterine fibroids. However, Williams transformed in front of the rapturous Arthur Ashe crowd. After losing the first set to the 11th-seeded Karolina Muchova, Williams mounted a momentous comeback.

Suddenly, people started hoping that they’ll see Williams’ first US Open win since 2019. However, that hope was short-lived as Williams ended up losing 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. However, while even in loss, Williams’ heart was visible, the same cannot be said for Madison Keys, who collapsed under mounting pressure.

The 6th-seeded Keys committed 89 unforced errors during her 6-7(10), 7-6(3), 7-5 defeat against Mexico’s Renata Zarazua. It was an uncharacteristically poor performance from the American, who was having a career year till now. After the match, Keys admitted that the moment got to her.

“For the first time in a while, my nerves really got the better of me, and it kind of became a little bit paralyzing,” Keys noted. “I felt like I was just slow. I wasn’t seeing things the way that I wanted to, which I feel like resulted in a lot of bad decisions and lazy footwork.” Certainly, one can chalk that up to the US Open’s tendency to give surprises. The rest of the Americans also had an interesting day.

Frances Tiafoe Leads Charge As Multiple American Players Reach the US Open Round 2

The 2024 US Open semi-finalist, Frances Tiafoe, took 2 hours and 28 minutes to vanquish Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka 6-3, 7-6(6), 6-3. While the second set posed an unexpected challenge, Tiafoe’s win took him to the second round, where he’ll face another American, Martin Damm.

The former Junior standout and son of 2006 US Open Doubles winner Martin Damm Sr. won his first-ever Grand Slam match against Darwin Blanch. The 17-year-old American wildcard had no answer for Damm’s serves. As a result, Damm had an easy 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 win. Then there was Jenson Brooksby.

Many may remember him as the guy who left Novak Djokovic impressed after a hard-fought battle in 2021. This was Brooksby’s first US Open since 2022, and he didn’t disappoint. In an epic 5-set match that stretched to 3 hours 46 minutes, Brooksby defeated Aleksander Vukic 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. However, not every American had a good night. Reilly Opelka faced a tough first-round 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 loss to Carlos Alcatraz.

Iva Jovic and Ann Li Shine in the US Open Round 1

The 17-year-old Iva Jovic thrashed the former world No. 29 Aliaksandra Sasnovich, 7-6, 6-3. Sasnovich never really got into a rhythm during the battle that once again highlighted Jovic’s great potential. The 17-year-old saved 6 of the 8 breakpoints and converted 4 herself. Similarly, Ann Li also staged a win, but hers came after a struggle.

Lii faced off against Rebecca Sramkova and lost her first set. Then somehow she clawed her way back into the contest and ended up winning 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Certainly, it was a night to remember for Americans, although there was also an embarrassing display. The young prodigy Mirra Andreeva demolished the American Alycia Parks 6-0, 6-1.

So it was quite a great day of tennis. Now all eyes are on round 2. Will these players continue their ascent? It’ll be interesting to see how they follow up on these performances.
