Updated Defensive Player of the Year Odds After Victor Wembanyama’s Season-Ending Injury

Charles Taudin

Wemby's injury has changed odds a lot !

The Spurs announced today that their All-Star, Victor Wembanyama, will miss the remainder of the season due to a deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder.

Beyond the Spurs’ already slim playoff hopes taking a major hit, Wembanyama’s absence has also caused a significant shift in the Defensive Player of the Year odds.

Previously the overwhelming favorite to win the award (-2000), Wembanyama’s injury now places Jaren Jackson Jr. as the new frontrunner (-130). This marks a dramatic change, as Jackson Jr. had odds of +2500 earlier this morning.

Updated NBA Defensive Player of the Year Odds:

1. Jaren Jackson Jr.: -130

2. Evan Mobley: -110

3. Dyson Daniels: +1100

4. Luguentz Dort: +1400

5. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander: +2500

6. Jalen Williams: +2000

7. Bam Adebayo: +5000

8. Amen Thompson: +5000

9. Rudy Gobert: +5000

How Jaren Jackson Jr is performing this season ?

Jaren Jackson Jr. has been a pivotal force for the Memphis Grizzlies during the 2024-2025 NBA season. Averaging 23.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.6 blocks, and 1.3 steals over 29.8 minutes per game, he has showcased his versatility and defensive prowess.

Jackson Jr.’s offensive contributions have been significant, with notable performances including a season-high 39 points against the Washington Wizards on November 8, 2024.  He also recorded impressive games with 38 points against the Phoenix Suns on December 31, 2024, and 35 points against the Dallas Mavericks on January 6, 2025.

Defensively, Jackson Jr. continues to be a cornerstone for the Grizzlies, leading the team with 1.6 blocks per game.  His consistent two-way play earned him a starting spot in the 2025 NBA All-Star Game, marking his second All-Star selection.

Beyond individual accolades, Jackson Jr.’s leadership has propelled the Grizzlies to a strong season, with a record of 36-18 as of February 20, 2025.

Why Jaren Jackson Jr can be DPOY this season ?

Jaren Jackson Jr. remains one of the premier shot-blockers in the NBA, averaging 1.6 blocks per game this season. His ability to protect the rim forces opponents to alter their shots in the paint, significantly reducing high-percentage scoring opportunities. He has consistently ranked among the league leaders in blocks over the past few seasons, proving his dominance as a defensive anchor.

Defensive Versatility and Impact on Matchups

Unlike traditional shot-blockers who primarily protect the paint, Jackson Jr. can defend multiple positions, making him a nightmare for opposing offenses. His quick lateral movement allows him to switch onto guards on the perimeter while still being a dominant force in the post. His 1.3 steals per game further highlights his ability to disrupt plays beyond just blocking shots.

Defensive Anchor for a Top Defensive Team

The Memphis Grizzlies’ defensive system heavily relies on Jackson Jr.’s presence. The team has been one of the top defensive units in the league, and a big part of that is his ability to contest shots, guard multiple positions, and provide help defense. His defensive rating and on/off impact show that Memphis is significantly better defensively when he is on the floor.

With Wembanyama out for the season, Jackson Jr. has a clear path to claim back-to-back DPOY honors.
