For over a decade, Travis Kelce has been the heartbeat of the Kansas City Chiefs’ dynasty. Drafted in 2013, the charismatic tight end quickly formed one of the greatest quarterback-tight end duos in NFL history with Patrick Mahomes under head coach Andy Reid. Together, they’ve delivered three Super Bowl titles, countless highlight-reel plays, and seven straight 1,000-yard seasons.

Travis Kelce Delaying Retirement Decision Until March

On Friday, Kelce confirmed he will not decided on his football future until after the 2025 season ends. Entering the final year of his current contract, the 13-year veteran wants to five the Chiefs clarity before free agency begins in March.

“I want to give the Chiefs a good opportunity whether I come back or not- or whether they want me back or not,” Kelce said. He added that retirement thoughts won’t enter his mind until the season is over.

Unlike his brother Jason, who emotionally retired after 2023, Travis has no interest in a farewell tour. “That’s not me,” he stated firmly. Even at 36, Kelce is still elite, leading Kansas City in targets (66), receptions (50), yards (631), and first downs (33), putting him on pace for his eight 1,000-yard season and first since 2022. Only Arizona’s Trey McBride has more receiving yards among tight ends this season.

A Tough 2025 Season and Possibly Kelce’s Last Dance

The 2025-26 campaign has been the Chiefs‘ rockiest in years. At just 5-5, Kansas is fighting to even reach the playoffs, a far cry from their usual dominance. Injuries, a revamped receiving yards, and offensive/defensive inconsistencies have tested the two-time defending champions.

If Kelce chooses retirement in March, fans may witness his final snaps in a game against the Raiders on January, 2026, as the Chiefs may not make the playoffs this season. The thought of No.87 walking off the field for good after the regular-season finale is heartbreaking for Chiefs Kingdom. For now, arguably the greatest tight end of his generation is focused only on turning the season around and keeping the door open for one more run with Mahomes and Reid.
