Tottenham Boss Ange Postecoglou Says Spurs Must Keep Star Man This Summer

Postecoglou has made it clear that losing the centre-back is not an option if the club are serious about building sustained success.

After ending their 17-year wait for silverware with Europa League triumph in Bilbao, Tottenham Hotspur are heading into a pivotal summer. Ange Postecoglou’s side may have endured a frustrating domestic campaign as they finishing a lowly 17th in the Premier League table.

However, their European glory ensured that Spurs will play Champions League football next season. While the Spurs management will undoubtedly look to reinforce key areas in the transfer window, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has underlined the importance of keeping one player at the club.

Romero Is Absolutely Important To Keep at This Football Club: Postecoglou

The player in question is Cristian Romero. Postecoglou described the Argentine defender as a vital piece in Spurs’ long-term plans. The 27-year old defender has recently been linked with moves to both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, with speculation growing around his future.

The defender has also previously spoken about his admiration for La Liga, fueling rumors of a potential summer departure. But Postecoglou has made it clear that losing the centre-back is not an option if the club are serious about building sustained success. Postecoglou said,

“I think Romero is absolutely important to keep at this football club. You just saw the way he’s been in the last (weeks) and he hasn’t been fully fit to be fair with his toe, but you’ve seen he’s a World Cup winner. He is a winner. You saw that in all the big games we’ve had and the lads certainly respect him very highly.”

“He makes them walk a bit taller, so yeah from my perspective it is a no-brainer that making sure players like him (stay), because if he goes, who do you replace him with? There is not too many out there like him. It will be very important for the club to try and retain him, and retain him for the longer-term I think.”

Romero’s influence was on full display during Spurs’ 1-0 Europa League final win over Manchester United in Bilbao. In the final, Romero was named UEFA’s Player of the Match, registering a 92% pass accuracy, winning six duels, and anchoring the backline against a desperate United attack. His composure and defensive solidity were crucial in delivering silverware and easing pressure on Postecoglou after a challenging season.
