The tight end is one of those positions that has undergone quite a bit of change in the modern-day game. Back in the day, the traditional tight end would have just two things to worry about: either block the defender or run and get open for a catch.

Nowadays, tight ends are slimmer, faster, and they line up all over the place and while their core job remains the same, they are used in a variety of ways. Tight ends in the modern game are much more athletic and agile which helps them in their pass-catching abilities as well as their prowess in running after the catch.

Top 5 TE Prospects at the 2025 NFL Draft

This year’s draft class is a decent group with a few prospects showcasing great upside. Many analysts and experts have mixed opinions on who the clear number one tight end in this draft will be. Having said that, it pretty much comes down to Colston Loveland and Tyler Warren.

Tyler Warren – Penn State

Penn State tight end Tyler Warren is as versatile a player as one can get. The former Nittany Lion lined up as a wide receiver, slot receiver, running back, and even quarterback. His strength is his advantage as he drags defenders while on the run.

Warren knows how to attack zone defenses and is great at coming down with the ball on contested catches. As a receiving tight end in 2024, Warren had 1,233 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns. His monstrous 2024 season earned him several honors, such as the Big Ten Tight End of the Year, First-team All-Big Ten, First-team All-American, and the John Mackey Award.

Colston Loveland – Michigan

Colston Loveland, out of Michigan, is one of the better route-running tight ends in the draft. He has a safe pair of hands and can catch the ball on the run. He is known for running away from coverage and his smoothness off the line when the ball is snapped.

Loveland didn’t have the most dominant season in 2024, but that was due to a shoulder injury that required surgery. His 2023 season was an excellent one in which he played a major role in helping the Wolverines win the CFP National Championship.

Mason Taylor – LSU

Mason Taylor played three years of college football for the LSU Tigers. He is the son of former NFL defensive end Jason Taylor as well as the nephew of linebacker Zach Thomas, both of whom are inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Clearly, the athletic gene has rubbed off on the 20-year-old Florida native.

Speaking about his attributes, Taylor became the first 100-reception, 1,000-yard tight end in LSU history. He has the tendency to break tackles when he has open space, the ability to catch the ball in stride, and has great speed. Still young, Taylor’s game has the potential to rise to new heights once in the NFL.

Harold Fannin Jr. – Bowling Green

Harold Fannin Jr. from Bowling Green had a phenomenal 2024 season, leading all tight ends in NCAA Division I FBS in receptions with 117 and receiving yards with 1,555. He also added 10 touchdowns and set multiple FBS records throughout his collegiate career.

Fannin’s honors include the 2024 MAC Offensive Player of the Year, 2024 MAC Most Valuable Player, Consensus All-American (2024), and 2-time First-team All-MAC in 2023 and 2024. The Bowling Green alum exhibits good speed and strength, allowing him to fight through contact.

Elijah Arroyo – Miami

Former Miami tight end Elijah Arroyo missed a lot of the action in 2022 and 2023 due to injury, but came back strong during the 2024 season. Arroyo has the ability to find open spaces. He is able to shake defenders at the top of the route, catch the ball on the run, and has a good feel for the deep ball. The former Hurricane is much more of a pass-catching tight end than a blocking one.
