Head-to-Head Favors Machac, but Grass May Shift the Balance
Seventh seed Tomas Machac will face unseeded Fabian Marozsan in the second round of the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle. The Czech opened his campaign with a hard-fought three-set win over lucky loser Jesper de Jong. Marozsan, meanwhile, came through a tight battle of his own, rallying past Miomir Kecmanovic in a comeback win that featured a tiebreaker in the opening set.
Machac opened his season on a high, reaching the third round of the Australian Open, following it up with a quarterfinal run in Dallas and a title win at the Mexico Open. Along the way, he notched solid wins over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Brandon Nakashima, and Learner Tien. Since that breakthrough, however, Machac’s momentum has dipped.
Illness forced him to retire mid-match at both Indian Wells and Miami, followed by a withdrawal from Barcelona. His troubles didn’t end there. Injuries struck again in Geneva and at Roland Garros, where a calf and then a back issue led to further mid-match retirements. Still, when healthy, Machac’s numbers speak for themselves: 148 aces, a 73% success rate on first-serve points, and a 46% break point conversion from 159 opportunities.
It's been a strange few months for Tomas Machac.

After lifting his 1st ATP title in Acapulco in February, the Czech has won just 5 of his next 12 matches – retiring in his last two

Marozsan has had a similarly stop-start season. He peaked early with a quarterfinal in Hong Kong and later reached the semifinals in Munich too. But elsewhere, he struggled to make it past the last 16, often falling early.
Like Machac, health issues hampered his rhythm. A nagging ankle injury ended his Indian Wells run and later ruled him out of Bucharest. Statistically, Marozsan has struck 150 aces and won 71% on his first serve, though he’s converted just 33% of his 201 break point chances.

Tomas Machac leads the head-to-head against Fabian Marozsan 1-0, having claimed their only prior meeting last year in Vienna. In that match, the Czech stunned Marozsan in straight sets, edging a tight opening-set tiebreak before closing it out with confidence.
Now, they clash again and this time on the grass courts of Halle. Will the change in surface change the result? Or is Machac set to extend his edge? We’ll find out soon enough.

Machac holds the head-to-head edge and has proven he can deliver big wins when healthy. While both players have struggled with consistency and fitness, the Czech’s superior serve stats and past win over Marozsan give him the slight edge.

Prediction: Tomas Machac in straight sets
With Machac at 8/11 and Marozsan at 11/10, bookmakers lean toward the Czech, though only marginally. It suggests a close contest, but Machac’s prior win and sharper breakpoint efficiency justify his narrow favoritism.
