Thomas Muller Signs With Vancouver Whitecaps in Blockbuster MLS Move

German superstar Thomas Muller will be expected to play a key leadership role on and off the pitch for Vancouver Whitecaps.

One of football’s most decorated players is heading to Major League Soccer. Legendary German forward and Bayern Munich icon Thomas Muller has officially signed with Vancouver Whitecaps after a glittering 25-year spell with the Bundesliga giants. The 35-year-old will join the Canadian side for the remainder of the 2025 MLS season on a standard contract, before transitioning into a Designated Player role in 2026.

This move exempts his wages from the salary cap and positions him as a marquee figure in the club’s ambitions. Vancouver completed the signing after securing Muller’s discovery rights from FC Cincinnati for a package worth $400,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM), split between the 2025 and 2026 seasons.

Vancouver Whitecaps are currently second in the Western Conference, just one point behind San Diego. The Whitecaps have 10 regular season matches left and are poised for a serious postseason run. As a result, Muller is expected to play a key leadership role on and off the pitch for the Canadian side.

Whitecaps Can Accomplish Something Special: Muller

New Vancouver Whitecaps signing Thomas Muller believes the Canadian club can achieve something truly special and he’s ready to play his part. Few players in world football boast a resume like Muller’s: 756 appearances for Bayern Munich, 250 goals, 276 assists, 12 Bundesliga titles and two Champions League trophies.

As the 35-year-old German icon prepares for his potential debut on August 17 against Houston Dynamo FC at BC Place, he’ll have ample time to integrate with his new teammates. Six of the Whitecaps’ final nine regular-season fixtures will be played at home, providing the perfect stage for Muller to make an immediate impact. Despite his age, Muller remains in top physical condition and has stated that he still has more to give at the highest level.

After officially signing for the club, Muller said,

“I think everybody knows that the city of Vancouver is very beautiful, worldwide known. But the Whitecaps are reaching for something special this year. I’m a football player, so I’m always interested in what happens on the pitch. I saw some videos of the previous games and I think this year can be something special. I want to take my part.”
