Thomas Muller Joins Vancouver Whitecaps in Landmark MLS Move – Report

German Legend Departs Bayern Munich After 25 Years To Begin a New Chapter in Canada.

After an illustrious 25-year journey with Bayern Munich, German legend Thomas Muller is set to begin his time in Major League Soccer (MLS) with Vancouver Whitecaps. The 35-year-old recently bid farewell to Bayern after their FIFA Club World Cup campaign.

He then confirmed via a video message that he is “headed across the pond.” Thus, signaling his move to North America. While Los Angeles FC and FC Cincinnati were long considered frontrunners, Vancouver seem to have emerged as the one securing Muller’s signature.

Reportedly, Whitecaps reached an agreement with FC Cincinnati to acquire Muller’s MLS discovery rights. It is a prerequisite for signing foreign players. According to GIVEMESPORT, the Whitecaps will pay $400,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) to Cincinnati for the rights.

A Complicated Transfer Path

Initially, Vancouver did not consider Muller as a viable signing due to their roster limitations. Additionally, they had a pressing need for defensive reinforcements and lacked an open Designated Player (DP) spot. They also weren’t actively seeking high-profile attacking talent.

However, interest from Australian side Sydney FC raised urgency. As a result, MLS and Vancouver fast-tracked negotiations to avoid losing the 2014 World Cup winner to another league. Though FC Cincinnati and LAFC both expressed interest, negotiations proved difficult.

LAFC was Muller’s preferred destination but reportedly, they shifted focus to Tottenham Hotspur star Heung-Min Son after failing to strike a deal with Cincinnati. As for FCC, the German international declined their approach due to wage structure constraints and the lack of a DP slot.

Now with the discovery rights secured, Vancouver seem to be poised to sign Muller on a Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) deal worth around $1.7 million for the remainder of the 2025 season. He is expected to be upgraded to a DP contract in 2026.

A New Chapter for Vancouver Whitecaps and Thomas Muller

Müller will fill the midfield void left by Stuart Armstrong. And he will also become the most decorated player to ever don a Whitecaps jersey. He has won 12 Bundesliga titles, two Champions League trophies, and has over 500 goal contributions (250 goals and 276 assists) for Bayern Munich.

Undoubtedly, he brings unmatched pedigree to Vancouver’s squad. The Whitecaps are currently second in the Western Conference. They are also finalists in this season’s CONCACAF Champions Cup. They are looking at Muller as a pivotal addition in their push for silverware.

Reportedly, the German star also consulted Bastian Schweinsteiger before finalizing his decision. Muller’s Germany national team and Bayern teammate ended his career in MLS with Chicago Fire. If all goes to plan, Muller could make his debut as early as August 9 against San Jose.
