The situation surrounding FC Barcelona captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen has become a point of confusion for some time now. The 2025–26 season approaches and it’s still unclear what will become of his future. However, as of now, the veteran goalkeeper recently underwent surgery on his lower back.

The club confirmed the procedure he went through at the Sports Clinic Bordeaux Merignac in France via an official statement. The operation was deemed successful. However, the timeline of his return remains a matter of conflicting expectations. Barcelona stated that ter Stegen is “unavailable for selection.”

They also mentioned that his recovery will dictate his return. The 33-year-old shot-stopper himself claimed in an emotional social media message that he expects to be sidelined for three months. Other medical sources also suggest a longer absence, where he may be needed to stay out for possibly four to five months.

Ter Stegen wrote, “Physically and athletically, I feel in very good shape, although unfortunately I am not free from pain. The quickest and safest way for me to fully recover is through back surgery.” The uncertainty surrounding his exact recovery timeline is not just a fitness concern but it also has major financial implications for Barcelona.

Under La Liga’s financial fair play rules, if a player is out for over four months, the club can allocate 80% of their salary toward registering new players. With summer arrivals such as Marcus Rashford and Joan Garcia yet to be registered, the specifics of ter Stegen’s downtime could have wider consequences.

Internal Tensions Between Ter Stegen and Barcelona

Further complicating matters are rumors of friction between ter Stegen and the Barcelona hierarchy. Reports have suggested that the club has considered stripping him of the captaincy due to his firm stance on staying and his reported disagreement over the handling of his medical case.

However, the German goalkeeper flatly denied such tensions. Speaking to the media ahead of his surgery, ter Stegen said, “The relationship with the club is good, always good, intact.” Notably, he missed pre-season and didn’t travel to Asia with the rest of the squad. However, he still assured that he will return stronger: “Don’t worry – I’ll be back!”

Barcelona are weighing their financial options and awaiting clarity from the Spanish Football Federation’s medical committee. In the midst of it, the story of one of the club’s captains’ future continues to evolve. Especially considering Barca now have a first-choice goalkeeper in newly joined Joan Garcia and two more options in Wojciech Szczesny and Inaki Pena.
