Thomas Müller Accidentally Reveals USMNT Call-Up for Whitecaps Defender

Thomas Müller stole the headlines both on and off the pitch on Saturday night. Notably, the Vancouver Whitecaps new signing not only scored a late penalty in a 3-2 comeback win over St. Louis City SC, but also accidentally broke some USMNT national team news.

In his post-match press conference, Müller let slip that teammate Tristan Blackmon is set to receive his first-ever call-up to the U.S. men’s national team for upcoming international friendlies. The USMNT have friendlies lined up against South Korea and Japan in September, followed by matches with Ecuador and Australia in October.

Thomas Müller Accidentlly Makes Big Revelation

U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino has not yet announced his squad for the friendlies. While Müller didn’t confirm which camp Blackmon will join, his comments all but confirm that the defender will finally get his long-awaited chance to represent his country.

“With the new signings coming in, they have a little bit more time. On the other hand, we’re playing during international break in October, we were missing some guys at this moment, and now Tristan is nominated for the U.S.,” Müller said before laughing and realizing the announcement had not yet been made official.

The German quickly tried to backtrack, jokingly attempting to “swallow” his words, but the news was already out. “In the end, it is what it is. I heard what I heard. Congrats to Tristan and congrats to the U.S.,” he added with a cheeky smile.

Blackmon has been a mainstay for Vancouver over the past four seasons, anchoring the defense during their run to three Canadian Championship titles and a CONCACAF Champions Cup Final. He previously won the 2022 MLS Cup with LAFC and has played 171 MLS matches, tallying seven goals and seven assists. Despite his consistency, this would be his first official senior call-up, after only making the 60-man preliminary roster for the 2025 Gold Cup.
