‘That Ain’t My Job’ – LeBron James Washes His Hands Off Luka Doncic’s Contract Extension Drama

Akash

LeBron James has shared his two cents regarding Luka Doncic’s contract and his future at the Los Angeles Lakers. After a brutal NBA Playoffs series loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, everything is feeling shaky for the Lakers. Questions about LeBron’s future, Luka’s extension and the franchise’s road ahead have started popping up.

James while addressing Luka Doncic’s extension said, “No, that ain’t my job. I know, Luka knows how I feel about him. And ultimately, that trade happened for the future. That’s not for me. Luka has to decide what he has to do with his future. He’s [26] years old, I’m 40, so he can’t be basing his career off me. That’s just real.”

The 40-year-old was blunt with the reporters, suggesting he will not be playing any role in Luka Doncic’s future at Lakers. Fans are surprised that LeBron James decided to distance himself from the extension. With the influence that James has at the Lakers, he does have the power of persuasion over any incoming and outgoing.

Some believe that Lakers’ legend was not happy with parting ways with his long time friend and teammate Anthony Davis. Which is why he has distanced himself from the whole Luka Doncic extension fiasco. However, the Lakers’ management have been clear that they brought the Slovenian international as their franchise’s future face.

Lakers’ Future Hinges on Offseason Ambition

Luka Doncic’s current contract runs till the 2026-27. It remains unclear what the guard will decide next. The easiest and most probable outcome would be to sign an extension and stay at the historic franchise for his rest of the career.

But, the front office at the Lakers will have to show ambition in the off season for Luka’s extension. They will need to take the former Dallas Mavericks player into confidence by strengthening the roster. Currently, Lakers barely have any defense, and it was one of the reason behind their early exit from the playoffs.

Moreover, with LeBron James’ career nearing its end, Los Angeles Lakers will have the space to accommodate multiple players or even a star player. Whatever moves the front office carries out in the following trade windows will influence Luka Doncic’s contract decision. Luka Doncic will be looking at the front office so that his prime years don’t go wasteful.
