Terry McLaurin a No Show at Commanders Minicamp Amidst Pending Contract Extension

McLaurin is a vital piece for the Commanders future aspirations

Even though it is the offseason in the NFL, there are still plenty of things for franchises to get done. With training camps underway currently, teams are busy preparing for the season ahead, and while minicamp is a mandatory event, there are always some notable absentees to keep an eye on.

Currently, there are a few players who have not reported to their respective teams’ minicamps, and that includes the Washington Commanders’ wide receiver, Terry McLaurin. The star wideout is holding out due to his pending contract extension, but NFL Insider Adam Schefter believes it is only a matter of time before both sides reach an agreement.

Adam Schefter feels an Extension will get done

On the Pat McAfee Show, NFL insider Adam Schefter was asked about Terry McLaurin and his pending contract extension in Washington. McLaurin has not participated in the mandatory minicamp and could face a fine for the same.

According to Schefter, he feels that Washington believes they will be able to work out a deal with their star receiver. With McLaurin not attending minicamp, it shows that he is not on the same page as the Commanders, but Schefter believes that he is a well-loved personality within the community.

“I think the team feels like it’s going to get something done with Terry McLaurin. I think Terry McLaurin clearly is frustrated with where talks are at, because not only did he not show up for the mandatory minicamp, but he hasn’t participated in any of the team’s offseason activities. He’s been a no-show for that, and here’s a guy that is immensely respected widely beloved within that organization.”

To prove his point further, the NFL insider also referenced his production, which has been at the top with 5 consecutive 1,000-plus receiving yard seasons. The wide receiver market has seen some big extensions this offseason, with Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins earning big money in Cincinnati as well as DK Metcalf’s handsome contract in Pittsburgh.

“When you look at his numbers, they’re as good as most any receiver around the league. We’ve seen huge deals given out this off season, and so with the numbers that he’s put up with what he means to that team, that community, that city, Terry McLaren is obviously trying to get paid now. And I believe that the two sides will find a way to figure it out at some point in time, they’re just not there right now.”

Terry McLaurin’s Production Over the Years

The Commanders’ wideout has been one of the best players on the team ever since his rookie year in 2019, when he caught 58 receptions for 919 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns. Since then, he has produced over 1,000 receiving yards each season for five straight years from 2020 to 2024.

Last year, the Commanders selected quarterback Jayden Daniels with the number 2 overall pick, and the two were able to enjoy excellent chemistry on the field. As a matter of fact, McLaurin achieved a career-best 13 touchdowns last season. He also had 227 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns in 3 postseason games last year, which just goes to prove his importance to the team.

The Commanders made it all the way to the NFC Conference Championship game in the 2024 season, and now with the addition of Deebo Samuel to the team, there is a great deal of expectation on their shoulders, and for that, McLaurin’s production will be a key aspect. As he heads into the final year of his contract, a new deal will only be a positive for the 29-year-old.
