Three-time Roland Garros champion Novak Djokovic is set to lock horns with World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in a blockbuster semifinal at the French capital on Friday. The duo shares a 4-4 head to head record so far, and will be desperate to win for many different reasons in this potential ‘match of the year’ contender. Ahead of their 2025 French Open semifinal, two former USA stars have doubled down on the match-up.

Djokovic has had a poor start to the current season – after retiring at the Australian Open, he was dumped out of the tournament in four of his next five opening rounds. A Miami Open final and Geneva Open title round off an otherwise mediocre campaign by his loftily high standards. Yet, securing the elusive 100th trophy in the Swiss city has given him a newfound confidence at Roland Garros.

The Sinner face-off could be dreadful for 38-year-old Djokovic. Termed by Jim Courier as a ‘Knockdown vs Lockdown’ encounter, the top seed will aim to dismantle his Serbian opponent with the steely offence that we’ve come to expect from him. Provided he can control the attacks and find some variation, Djokovic could face difficulties considering his deep court position.

Meanwhile, Sinner is enjoying a magnificent re-entry on tour. After a three month suspension, the Italian phenom made a dominant return by reaching the final of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome. He lost to Carlos Alcaraz – who is the No. 2 seed this week – in the summit clash. Yet to drop a set at the clay court major this year, Sinner is regarded as a firm favourite to capture his maiden championship in Paris.

There is a lot at stake for both players. Djokovic is aiming to win a mind-boggling 25th Grand Slam title – one that would ensure that he sits alone on the throne of tennis immortality. On the other hand, Sinner is looking to shut down his critics, make a statement upon his return, and prove that he is a magician on all surfaces. Speaking about the mouth-watering contest, former Top-10 players Jack Sock and John Isner had a lot to decode.

“He [Djokovic] is going to have to throw the kitchen sink at Jannik,” Sock asserted. “I think Sinner is playing almost unbeatable tennis right now. I give him [Djokovic] a slight chance, but not a huge one.” The 24-time major champ, who had a convincing 4-1 record against his Italian counterpart at one stage, has failed to beat him in their past three encounters. “As you said, it’s a tall task and unlikely,” he continued.

“In my mind, I think both players are out to prove something,” laid out Isner. The 6’10” giant believes it wouldn’t be surprising if Djokovic upsets the odds and picks up a victory. “I think Sinner is on this revenge tour. He had a three month suspension and he seems to be the strongest he’s ever been. So you have the No. 1 in the world and the greatest player of all time.”
