Suns owner expects Kevin Durant to sign contract extension in 2025

Gulshan Sharma

The 36-year-old NBA star will be a free agent in 2026 as per the contract.

Phoenix Suns had a blockbuster trade for the star player, Kevin Durant in February 2023 for a valuation of $4 billion. Owner Mat Ishbia was the key figure to complete the trade for the 14-time NBA All-Star. Suns continued their majestic form since pairing with Devin Booker.

Phoenix owner had a conversation with ESPN this week and he is keen to sign Kevin Durant to a contract extension in 2025. Mat Ishbia also wants the 2-time NBA Finals MVP to retire as a Sun. This development is big in the case of Durant’s contract which is expiring in 2025-26.

“We hope he finishes his career here in Phoenix” – Mat Ishbia

“(Durant) loves being in Phoenix, we love having him,” Ishbia gave insights to ESPN. “He’s off to an amazing start this season — one of the MVP leaders — and we’re off to a very good start. We expect Kevin to sign an extension, be with us for the long term. We hope he finishes his career here in Phoenix.

Suns owner added, “You can’t sign a two-year extension this last summer, you can’t do it based on the NBA rules. So we figured after the season we’ll talk about it, take care of it. Mat Ishbia is pretty sure that Kevin Durant will stay at the Phoenix Suns. “Kevin wants to be here, we want Kevin here. There’s never been one grumbling of anything different,” the Suns owner finished.

Phoenix Suns have been terrific in planning the roaster. Suns picked three-time All-Star Bradley Beal from the Washington Wizards in the 2023 and traded Deandre Ayton in a deal for Jusuf Nurkic. Ishbia also acquired two-time Coach of the Year Mike Budenholzer in May. Suns owner has invested $100 million in the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury to built a practice building.

The 36-year-old NBA star will be a free agent in 2026 as per the contract. Both parties bypassed a one-year contract extension worth $60 million before the regular season. The franchise decided to add a two-year extension next summer for a valuation of $120 million.

Kevin Durant has won two NBA championships and is a 14-time NBA All-Star. The future Hall of Famer has also won four Olympic gold medals with the USA team. He started his record 18th season, averaging 27.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, 53.3% shooting, and 42.9% from 3-point range.

Before sustaining a calf strain injury, Durant led the Phoenix Suns to an 8-1 start in the regular season. We can sense the value of this player as the Suns dropped five games out of six in his absence.
