Sun vs. Sky: Angel Reese’ First Career Triple-Double Guides Chicago Sky First Victory in WNBA Commissioner’s Cup

Reese also become third fastest player to reach the first triple-double in the league.

Angel Reese scored her first triple double of the career to guide Chicago Sky a 78-66 win on Sunday after three successive losses in the regular season. The 23-year-old forward scored 13 rebounds, 11 assists, 11 points, 3 steals and 2 blocks in a historic triple-double. The Sky now improved to 3-7 in the regular season and 1-3 in the Commissioner’s Cup play.

It was completely a dominating performance from the Sky and Angel Reese dropped her one of the best outings in the WNBA. Apart from her, Hailey Van Lith scored a career-high 16 points. Kia Nurse added 11 points, while Ariel Atkins and Kamilla Cardoso each had 10 points. Five Sky players recorded in double figures. Chicago shot 42.9% from the floor which is an improvement from previous three games.

Angel Reese Becomes Second Youngest to Score Triple-Double and Sky Win Third Game of the Season

Chicago Sky’s Angel Reese also set new records in her career’s first triple-double. The 23-year-old is now the youngest player to record a triple-double. Caitlin Clark holds the record for youngest player to score a triple-double in the WNBA. The Fever guard scored two triple-doubles at the age of 22.

Meanwhile, Reese also become third fastest player to reach the first triple-double in the league. She joined Courtney Vandersloot, Candace Parker and Courtney Williams to become fourth Sky player to record a triple-double in the WNBA.

The Sky bench outscored the Sun reserves 36-2 which is a dominant part of the game. Reserve Rachel Banham made her 300th career 3-pointer and Hailey Van Lith dropped a career-high performance. Sky held a 38-26 lead at halftime and they stretched it to seven points in third quarter. Chicago didn’t allow Sun to comeback in the final quarter as they outscored the hosts 19-12 to close the game.

For the Sun, Marina Mabrey scored a game-high 22 points, including five 3s. Tina Charles added 19 points and Jacy Sheldon had 12. Both teams struggled in 3-point shooting in the first half but Sky improved it in second half. Mabrey scored 16 points in the first half but failed to make an impact in the remaining quarters. She scored a three-pointer and two free throws to make Sun ahead of the Sky by three points but Sky pulled it back to regain the lead.

Connecticut Sun now fell to 2-8 in the regular season and 1-3 in the Commissioner’s Cup play. They have dropped fourth game out of five at home and will now take on season’s hot favorite Indiana Fever next. Sky will get back to Chicago for the home matchup against the Mystics. WNBA will have a six-game slate on Tuesday.
