Stephanie White Challenges Indiana Fever’s Pace and Toughness As Playoff Position Weakens Following Third Loss in Last Five WNBA Games

Fever slump continues as playoff race tightens

The Indiana Fever are clinging to playoff contention with just a few games left in the regular season. Their latest setback, a 21-18 record following Sunday’s loss to the Golden State Valkyries, has tightened the race with the postseason looming.

It marked the Fever’s third defeat in their last five outings. With momentum slipping, the team risks undoing months of progress at a critical phase. Indiana remains without star guard Caitlin Clark, who continues to recover from a groin injury and a bone bruise in her left ankle.

The standings show little margin for error. Only 1.5 games separate Golden State, Indiana, and the Seattle Storm, who themselves fell to the Los Angeles Sparks on Monday. In a season where the playoff chase has grown increasingly fierce, every result now carries significant weight.

Following the defeat, veteran forward Natasha Howard acknowledged the uphill battle awaiting them. Her words resembled head coach Stephanie White’s stern reminder that the playoff push has already begun.

“That’s one thing Steph said in the locker room, every game we play from now on is a playoff game. We’re trying to stay in that playoff race and play in the postseason. Our main thing is that we focus on the scouting report of whoever we got next,” Howard said.

Howard, Powers Fight but White Demands Urgency

Natasha Howard finished the contest with 13 points and six rebounds. Aerial Powers, recently integrated into the rotation, provided an offensive spark with 17 points in just 19 minutes off the bench.

Still, the Indiana Fever struggled defensively. Golden State shot a blistering 50.9% from the field, including 12-of-19 from long range. For White, the defeat was as much about effort and pace as execution.

“We were very tentative offensively. We didn’t play with any kind of pace. So even when we had opportunities to run in transition, we were jogging the ball up the floor. We allowed them to set their defense, and they’re one of the best defensive teams in the league, and you can’t allow them to do that,” White said.

The Fever close out their schedule with three games, the Phoenix Mercury on Tuesday, the Chicago Sky on Friday, and the Washington Mystics on Sunday. Each matchup now carries the weight of the postseason itself.
