World No. 25 Stefanos Tsitsipas has suffered yet another setback in his comeback trail on the ATP circuit. On Saturday, the Greek superstar withdrew from the 2025 Rolex Shanghai Masters, citing an injury flare-up. The decision arrived hours before the 27-year-old’s Round of 64 encounter against Portuguese sensation Nuno Borges.

Tsitsipas will be replaced by Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic in the main draw. It has been a nightmarish 2025 campaign for the two-time Grand Slam finalist, who finds himself languishing in the ATP Rankings at the moment. He is yet to enjoy a title charge after winning the Dubai Tennis Championships in February. With the Six Kings Slam as well as some important tour-level events fast approaching, Tsitsipas will be in a race against time to regain full fitness.

Why Did Stefanos Tsitsipas Pull Out of the Shanghai Masters 2025?

Stefanos Tsitsipas has withdrawn from the ATP Rolex Shanghai Masters 2025 due to a leg injury. He also endured some back issues earlier this season, and this concern flared up whilst he was serving during Greece’s 2025 Davis Cup tie against Brazil. The two injury setbacks have seemingly caused Tsitsipas another heartbreaking setback. The No. 24 seed was due to walk onto court hours later, but took the hard decision of pulling out.

Earlier this year, Tsitsipas also retired during his opening match at the Wimbledon Championships. Having skipped the China Open in Beijing, he was hoping to make a much-awaited return in Shanghai. The former World No. 3’s struggles have been compounded by his mediocre win-loss record in 2025 (22-18) and the fact that he has slipped to his lowest ranking in a long time.

Stefanos Tsitsipas will hope to recover in time for his next assignment – the Six Kings Slam – which offers a lucrative prize money of $6 million for the winner. Tsitsipas replaced British southpaw Jack Draper in this year’s competition. The exhibition tournament is set to take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from October 15.
