Victories from Pablo Carreno Busta and Marcel Granollers/Pedro Martinez set up a grand final for La Roja against defending champions Italy on Sunday. Provided they prevail in the summit clash, Spain will capture an incredible seventh crown at the World Cup of tennis.

Pablo Carreno Busta Wins Nail-Biting Battle vs Struff to Give Spain Early Advantage

Both teams opted to field their second best singles players, as Pablo Carreno Busta and Jan-Lennard Struff kicked off proceedings in Bologna. The 34-year-old Spaniard stayed away from the powerful forehand of Struff, and struck first to grab the opener by 6-4. It was an extremely tight encounter, with just two points separating the players throughout the match.

Struff was creating inroads on the Carreno Busta serve, but failed to convert his chances. The German veteran managed just one break point conversion throughout the duration of the tussle, which set him up for disaster. Refusing to relent, he pushed the second set to a tiebreaker. Despite taking a healthy 6-1 lead, Struff squandered all his set points as well as the match.

In the end, Carreno Busta needed 1 hour and 44 minutes to complete a tense 6-4 7-6(6) win and give Spain the advantage.

Granollers/Martinez Hold Their Nerve After Alexander Zverev Pulls Germany Back Into the Contest

In the second men’s singles fixture, World No. 3 and three-time Grand Slam finalist Alexander Zverev edged past Jaume Munar in two tiebreak sets to equalize for his country. It was an encounter filled with long-drawn exchanges as well as brutal winners from all around the court. Sascha managed to maintain a high first serve percentage of 82.5%, owing to Munar’s mediocre return. After two hours, the Germany vs Spain semifinal was set to be determined by a doubles match-up.
