Shai Gilgeous-Alexander added another feather to his cap!
The Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander once again proved why he is a well-deserved candidate for this year’s MVP Award. The Thunder edged past the Denver Nuggets and handed them a 127-103 loss to record their seventh straight win on Sunday, March 9.
As two of the top three Western Conference teams locked horns, Shai came up with a statement-making performance. The MVP front-runner finished with 40 points, eight rebounds and five assists. With this, he joined the elite company of Michael Jordan with another NBA record.
It was Shai’s third consecutive 40 point performance, but also his 40th 30+ point game of the year. With this, he became the only second player after legendary Michael Jordan in the last forty years to record over 30 points in more than 40 games over three consecutive seasons.
It was also Shai’s 58th consecutive 20+ point game. He is only five games shy of taking over Kobe Bryant’s 63-game record. There is simply no stopping for the OKC star, as he has now become the fastest player in the Thunder franchise to score 2000 points in a season.

After the Thunder recorded their seventh-straight win, Shai’s odds of winning the MVP have taken an outright lead on several bookmakers. As per the latest odds, he now has 73% on taking the MVP accolades, while Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic has 23% chances to win this year’s MVP.
However, Shai made it clear that team’s success comes first to him rather than winning any individual accolades. After Sunday’s game, he said that while he likes all these awards, nothing matters if the team doesn’t end up winning.

“I love MVPs, I love All-Stars, I love all the accolades that comes with it but none of it matters if you don’t win and that’s where I hang my hat,” said Shai following the win.
