Sergio Busquets To Retire at the End of MLS Season

Former Spain and Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets has announced that he will retire from professional football at the end of the 2025 Major League Soccer season. The Inter Miami midfielder leaves behind one of the most decorated careers in modern football. During his 18 years at Barcelona, Busquets collected 32 major honours, including nine La Liga titles and three Champions League crowns.

The former Spain international established himself as one of the finest holding midfielders in history. On the international stage, he earned 143 caps for Spain, playing a pivotal role in their triumphs at the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012. Busquets joined Inter Miami in 2023, reuniting with former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba and Luis Suarez.

“I feel like the time has come to say goodbye to my career as a professional footballer. It’s been almost 20 years of enjoying this incredible story I always dreamed of. I’m retiring very happy, proud, fulfilled, and above all, grateful. Thank you all very much, see you soon.”

Sergio Busquets Is Going To Be a Coach: Javier Mascherano

Over his career, Sergio Busquets amassed 722 appearances for Barcelona, the third-most in the club’s history. He retired from international duty in 2022 as Spain’s third-highest appearance maker. Inter Miami, who recently sealed their place in the MLS play-offs, will now look to give their legendary midfielder the perfect send-off.

Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano said the announcement provides “extra motivation” for the squad to finish strong. He also hinted at Busquets’ future beyond the pitch, “Busi is going to be a coach – when, how, and where will be up to him. I haven’t talked to him about whether he’ll return home or stay here in Miami.”
