Sanders Brothers Being Cast Out? – Rumors Circulate As Shedeur Sanders Replaced and Shilo Sanders Ejected Mid-Game

Sanders' brothers have failed to impress with neither earning a starting role

In the world of sports, an athlete following in the footsteps of a famous parent is always under the microscope from day one. These players, whose fathers or mothers have already exceeded expectations in their respective sport, become a heavier burden on their children who wish to succeed in their own right.

Just last year, we saw the case of young Bronny James, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in a bid to begin his professional basketball career. Bronny has been a subject of scrutiny and has been under the microscope ever since he touched a ball, and the same is true for the Sanders brothers, Shedeur and Shilo, in the NFL.

Sons of the legendary cornerback Deion Sanders, both Shedeur and Shilo are in their rookie seasons in the league. Well, Shedeur is at least, as for older brother Shilo, he has been waived by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following their last preseason game against the Buffalo Bills.

Shilo Sanders Ejected Then Waived by Buccaneers

During the latest round of preseason games, both brothers found themselves in the headlines for the wrong reasons. The Buccaneers played the Bills on Saturday, and Shilo Sanders found himself in the thick of the action.

Struggling to make a case for himself on the 53-man roster, this was going to be an important game for the elder Sanders. However, a tussle with Bills’ tight end Zach Davidson crushed his hopes for good.

While Davidson was blocking on the play, things got heated between the two players, and Sanders then threw a wild punch to Davidson’s face, which immediately got him ejected from the game. Consequently, the Buccaneers waived him from the roster and now finds himself without a team.

The NFL community, though, seems to be split following Sanders’ ejection, as many are of the opinion that Davidson’s actions after the whistle had already blown, including the grabbing of Sanders’ face mask, caused the cornerback to react. While throwing a punch is not excusable, fans expressed their disbelief over the one-way penalty.

Shedeur Sanders Replaced Midway through Final Quarter

As for his younger brother, Shedeur, he didn’t fare much better in his second preseason game for the Cleveland Browns. Shedeur looked like a completely different player than the one who started against the Panthers in week 1 of the preseason.

Against the Rams on Saturday, Sanders went just 3 of 6 for 18 passing yards and was taken out by head coach Kevin Stefanski for the final two minutes of the game. With the game on the line, Stefanski sent in Tyler Huntley to finish the job, which actually made no sense since the Browns released him anyway.

Stefanski has also received heat for making Sanders play with players who are going to get cut from the Browns roster. If Cleveland wanted to see who would back up Joe Flacco between Dillon Gabriel and Sanders, then both should have gotten the same opportunities to showcase their talent. Instead, Sanders was seen under heavy pressure as his O-line crumpled, leading to multiple sacks and incompletions while Gabriel played with higher-rated teammates.

This incident has called for Stefanski to be sacked by several fans, and even former NFL players have expressed their astonishment at why an equal opportunity was not provided to Sanders, especially after Stefanski confirmed in the post-game that the reason for substituting Sanders was not due to health factors.

Stefanski Responds to Criticism

At the end of the day, the coach has to make calls from what he sees on the field and what he has been seeing at training camp. Whether there is any merit for his actions or not, the fact of the matter is that Sanders will have to improve further if he is to see any meaningful game time.

When questioned about his decision, Stefanski gave an honest reply in which he said that he doesn’t concern himself with the outside noise and that he is committed to the development of all his rookies, Shedeur included.

The overall picture shows that while both Shedeur and Shilo have had their moments where they have shown, they haven’t exactly lit the preseason on fire. Fans of the players will no doubt be unhappy and might feel they are being mistreated, but at the end of the day, it is the coaches who know what is best for the team.

I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
