Rome Odunze Lighting Up Bears Training Camp – Will the Year 2 Receiver Be the Solution for a Struggling Caleb Williams?

Reports coming out of the Chicago Bears training camp indicate that second-year wideout Rome Odunze is having his way with the defense. Hailed as ‘unguardable’, Odunze seems to have adjusted well to the new offensive system installed by former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.

Of course, Johnson’s offense is not the easiest one to master, and while it may take more time to get the complete hang of it, Odunze’s overall progression has been impressive.

After finishing the 2024 season with a 5-12 record, the Bears will be hoping for a turnaround this year, and that will most definitely start with the connection between Caleb Williams and Odunze.

Odunze’s Production in 2024

As a rookie in 2024, Odunze had a decent season with good production considering he was the third pass-catching option behind the likes of DJ Moore and Keenan Allen. Even so, Odunze caught 54 passes from 101 targets for 734 yards and 3 touchdowns.

The wide receiver is showing his worth in training camp this year, and word is he could very well be the WR1 on the team soon. Odunze has also shown his eagerness to be the go-to guy for Williams as per his media interactions.

“You know, a year under our belt definitely helps us continue to build that. The new offense, learning it together, having the knowledge playing in the NFL season, putting that into this offense, building a connection that way is great too. Of course, I want to be that number one guy for him, go kill it and be that duo, but we have a bunch of playmakers on the field that’s gonna do a good job for us.”

The Caleb Williams and Rome Odunze Connection

Both Odunze and Williams are entering the second year of their professional careers. Their journey in the NFL started when Chicago selected the pair in the first round, Williams as the number one overall pick and Odunze as the number nine overall.

Being the rookie year for both players, the 2024 season saw plenty of ups and downs along the way as both learned what it meant to play the game at the highest level. But the pair have worked through the offseason, and after a year of professional football under their belt, the duo has developed a connection that is working well.

Last week, the biggest headline coming out of the Bears’ training camp was how Williams was struggling with his footwork and other things, leading to head coach Ben Johnson pulling the first team off the field.

But with Odunze showing plenty of progress, he can step up and ease some of the pressure off the second-year quarterback. Under Johnson, the wideouts are expected to learn different wide receiver spots and become a more versatile offense. If Odunze can crack this system, he has the ability to make life easier for his quarterback.

Being a part of the NFC North, the Bears already have their work cut out for themselves. The Lions have been the dominating team in the division for the past couple of seasons, and the Vikings and Packers are always in the mix of things. Chicago has the roster to compete; the only question is whether or not they can put in the performances to go along with it.
