‘I think there are safety issues’ – Roger Goodell Weighs in on the Possible Ban of the Tush Push

The “Tush Push,” also dubbed the “Brotherly Shove,” is a short-yardage play that’s stirred up the NFL, especially since the Philadelphia Eagles have perfected the play. The Eagles popularized it in 2022 and the play can be described as a twist on the quarterback sneak where, for context, Jalen Hurts takes the snap under center and quite simply dives forward, with his Eagles’ teammates pushing from the back mostly involving the two or sometimes three players like tight ends or running backs.

The Eagles have seemingly mastered this play and they have used it on multiple occasions. In fact Philly is so good with this play that they have converted on 39 of 48 times Tush Push attempts, giving them a success rate of 81.3%, whether it’s on first downs or touchdowns last season.

The play’s roots can be traced back to around 2018 when Vikings’ Linebacker Anthony Barr suggested running a play, which is now known as the Tush Push. However, now, it’s under fire as the Green Bay Packers first suggested banning the play in 2025, citing safety concerns. The Los Angeles Rams’ head coach Sean McVay even went as far to call Tush Push a “rugby like play” instead of football.

NFL owners tabled the vote in April of 2025 but have delayed the decision further to May. While we do not think that one single play getting banned would affect the Eagles all that much. However, it is one of their favorite plays to run and have achieved a ton of success with it.

Roger Goodell Spoke About the Tush Push

It seems like even NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell, is not a big fan of the Tush Push as well and in a recent interview he said;

“There are safety issues that are being considered in that case. We have very little data from it but it’s beyond data. There’s also the mechanism of injury that we study. That leads us to show the risk involved with the particular play or particular tackle. Those are things that we did discuss. I do think there’s a lot of discussion going back to the previous rule. Back to pre 2004. There’s some dispute about how long that rule was in play but the reality of it is, I think that makes a lot of sense.”

There’s no injury data that backs this current claim with the Tush Push harming safety of the players. The decision to ban the play is still under discussion and won’t be announced up until May. If banned, it will most certainly affect the Eagles and the Buffalo Bills as they are the two teams who utilize the play in short-yardage situations, more often than not. For now the Tush Push’s fate hangs in the balance.
