Future of the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium Hangs in the Balance – Decision Likely by This Summer

Clark Hunt to decide on whether to continue with Arrowhead or build a new stadium

Arrowhead Stadium which is nowadays known as the GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium is one of the most iconic football venues in the NFL. This stadium not only boasts one of the loudest and most passionate fanbases in the league but has been a huge home-field advantage for the Kansas City Chiefs. Unfortunately, though, the stadium’s future has become a big talking point as of late considering the looming decision of whether to renovate it or to build a new one altogether.

As per the latest reports doing the rounds on the internet, Chiefs’ CEO Clark Hunt has set a summer deadline for a final decision on what is to be done. This deadline also echoes a similar summer deadline for Kansas City’s MLB team the Royals as per reports. Both franchises have a long-standing history at the Truman Sports Complex in Kansas City, Missouri with Arrowhead Stadium opening in 1972 and Kauffman Stadium in 1973.

Why Is the Chiefs Future at Arrowhead Unknown?

There are multiple reasons why the Chiefs need to take a call on their future plans involving where to play. Although they have been playing at Arrowhead Stadium for over 50 years now, they are now looking to upgrade the facility to better suit their future needs. Chiefs’ CEO, Hunt has been wanting the city to host a Super Bowl for quite some time, but without a roof that is not possible.

Moreover, many teams are now building new stadiums with all the latest technology and facilities to reflect the modern day. The Chiefs proposed a tax for upgrades along with the Royals but as it happens, the Jackson County voters rejected paying for them by a massive difference of 58% to 42%.

Now, the onus lies with the Hunt family and the Chiefs to find a solution and to decide whether to stay on the Missouri side of Kansas City or the Kansas side. The way things stand, KC has three options to choose from, those being:

Continue renovating around Arrowhead Stadium and providing fans with a better atmosphere and tailgating spaces.

The state of Kansas is more than eager to have the Chiefs relocate to the other side of the border and has already held discussions with the Chiefs about a brand-new domed stadium that is likely to cost $3 billion. However, should the Chiefs decide to stay in Missouri and renovate Arrowhead, that cost is likely to be around just $800 million.

While a domed roof will not give the typical feel to an NFL game that the fans at Arrowhead are accustomed to witnessing, it is now the need of the hour. As more and more new stadiums feature a complete dome or a retractable roof, the Chiefs will have to do the same if they want to host a Super Bowl one day. Additionally, a roof will also open up a lot more options for hosting other events as well such as the Final Four and college football playoff games.
