The 24-year-old winger, long linked with a move to the Premier League, was an unused substitute in Madrid’s La Liga opener on Tuesday night, raising fresh doubts about his role this season. Despite making four changes in the 1-0 win over Osasuna — a match decided by Kylian Mbappé’s penalty — Alonso opted against using Rodrygo.
After the game, the Madrid manager moved to play down speculation, stressing that the Brazilian is still part of his plans. “Nothing’s happening,” Alonso told reporters. “The Club World Cup was a different context because of the competition. Today is just a game, we can put the rest behind us. What counts is this season, and of course, I’m counting on Rodrygo.”
Pressed on his decision to bring on youngster Franco Mastantuono instead, Alonso added: “I already saw that he could contribute, and he’s had some good minutes. Competition is fantastic, and I love having two players who can play in every position. Then it’s down to me to make the choice.”
Rodrygo’s future has been the subject of intense speculation this summer. Arsenal were reported to have explored the possibility of a move earlier in the window, while Manchester City have recently emerged as potential suitors. Although a transfer would be difficult to complete, his lack of involvement at El Sadar will only fuel rumours of an exit.
For now, Alonso insists the forward remains a key part of his squad — but with Real Madrid’s attacking options stacked, the uncertainty around Rodrygo is unlikely to disappear any time soon.
