All-Spanish battle to entertain Madrid crowd in Round-1.
The second out of three Masters-1000 tournaments on clay has officially arrived. In this fierce all-Spanish opening round encounter at the 2025 Madrid Masters, veteran Roberto Bautista Agut takes on protege Jaume Munar on Court Manolo Santana. The winner will face top seed and World No. 2 Alexander Zverev in the Round of 64.
Roberto Bautista Agut is redefining the saying that age is just a number. At 37, the Spaniard is set to complete two decades since turning pro this year. Bautista Agut’s best performance this season has been reaching the last 16 in Dubai and Bucharest. At the recently concluded BMW Open in Munich, the World No. 55 lost to Van de Zandschulp in the Round of 32.

On the verge of breaking into the Top-50 for the first time, Jaume Munar has caused a few upsets in the recent past. In Dallas, he beat No. 4 seed Ben Shelton; in Miami, it was the turn of former US Open champion Daniil Medvedev to suffer a shock loss; in Barcelona – Frances Tiafoe. The 27-year-old is 5-11 on clay courts over the past year.
Roberto Bautista Agut leads the head to head record against Jaume Munar by 2-1. Their last meeting was at Roland Garros in 2024.
Bautista Agut and Munar have faced each other on three separate occasions – all of which have been on outdoor clay. While RBA dominated the duel to start off the rivalry, it was the younger star who bounced back last year in Paris. While the veteran has won 5 of the 9 contested sets so far, Munar has won 4.

Jaume Munar starts as the favourite ahead of this important clash in Madrid. With the Spanish crowd set to cheer on both players to the fullest, it will be an engaging atmosphere on Court Manolo Santana. If Munar can justify his higher ranking, he will equal the head to head record to 2-2.
Prediction: Jaume Munar in straight sets.
