Refs Favoring the Chiefs Again? – Lions’ WR Amon-Ra St. Brown Disagrees with the Notion

The narrative that the NFL referees are biased towards the Kansas City Chiefs is nothing new by now. Almost for the entirety of the last season, the focus was on how the refs allowed the Chiefs to get away with several controversial calls.

Now, fast-forward to the Sunday Night Football (SNF) game between the Chiefs and the Lions, and the same issue has popped up once again. The Chiefs, who were flagged 13 times for 109 yards the previous week, Kansas City didn’t receive a single penalty against the Lions on Sunday.

Naturally, there was plenty of criticism over the referees’ bias towards KC, especially by the fans who felt the men in stripes missed out on a few holds and a taunting celebration as well. Lions’ wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, however, had a different approach to the entire situation.

Amon-Ra St. Brown Doesn’t Want to Leave Games up to Refs

Speaking on the ‘St. Brown Podcast’, Amon-Ra St. Brown showed his class after the loss to the Chiefs in week 6. When asked about his thoughts on the Chiefs’ being called for just 1 or 2 penalties that were declined, St. Brown kept it real honest.

“Honestly, when we’re in the like when I’m in the game, I don’t really like this. I didn’t even see like half the stuff. Something that’s going on, I don’t even see during the game.”

The Lions’ WR1 then proceeded to take the high road and even felt that it was more important that the team focus on all the opportunities they had in the game. St. Brown also added that teams should not leave it up to the referees.

“But honestly, for us, like especially the way I look at it, I feel like our team looks at it is we had plenty of chances to make plays in that game to win the game. The last thing any team should do is blame the ref for a loss. I feel like it’s never up to the referees, and you can never leave it up to them.”

While most Lions’ fans felt that they got robbed in that game, St. Brown made it clear that was not the case. Detroit had plenty of opportunities that it didn’t capitalize on. As for the refs, he also said that they have a job to do, and if they throw a flag, then fine, but his focus remains on making the play instead of worrying about the flag, despite any contact.

In today’s day and age, where almost every play is up for scrutiny, it is refreshing to hear one of the league’s top players take such a valid stand. Although the saying goes ‘to each his own’, this approach to the game makes Amon-Ra St. Brown a truly wonderful player both on and off the field.
