Real Madrid are staring down the barrel of a Champions League exit after a bruising 3-0 loss to Arsenal in the first leg of their quarter-final tie. However, the second leg is set for Wednesday night at the Santiago Bernabeu which has been a fortress for them. And Carlo Ancelotti’s side are clinging to belief.

Belief which is backed by history, home advantage, and a word that has become synonymous with impossible turnarounds in Spanish football: Remontada. Going into the match, Ancelotti assured that they will try ‘until the last minute’. The Italian tactician reminded that they’ve been through this before and came out triumphant and they’ll try again.

What Madrid Must Do

To reach the Champions League semi-finals, Real Madrid must win this match by at least 4-goal margin or more. If Los Blancos lead by a 3-goal margin at the end of the official 90 minutes, the match will go to extra time and potentially penalties. Away goals are no longer in the picture, so a 3-0 win only forces extra time and anything less sees Arsenal progress.

Eduardo Camavinga saw a red card in the first leg. With him suspended, Dani Ceballos should start in midfield. “We will need every player to be at 200% against Arsenal and the fans in the stadium right behind us,” Ceballos told Diario Sport, “We are hoping for an incredible atmosphere and that will help us to turn it around.”

The Bernabeu Effect and Arsenal’s Caution

Even with Arsenal’s commanding lead, boss Mikel Arteta is not taking the return leg lightly. During the post-match press conference, he said, “It’s just half-time, and we’re going to have to be even better in Madrid to go through.” Records are in Arsenal’s favour as teams that have led by three or more goals in Champions League knockout first legs have advanced to the next round 91.5% of the time.
