The Las Vegas Raiders have fired offensive coordinator Chip Kelly just 11 games into his tenure, hours after a frustrating 24-10 defeat to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday that sank the team to 2-9. The move, announced by first-year head coach Pete Carroll, marks the second coordinator dismissal this season and underscores the organization’s desperation to salvage a lost campaign.

Chip Kelly Short Stint With the Raiders Ends in Frustration

Kelly, 61, joined the Raiders in February after orchestrating Ohio State’s national championship offense in 2024, lured by a groundbreaking $6 million annual salary that made him the NFL’s highest-paid coordinator. Expectations were sky-high for a unit featuring two-time Pro Bowler Geno Smith at QB, first-round rookie running back Ashton Jeanty, and second year All-Pro tight end Brock Bowers. Instead, after just 11 games in, the Raiders’ attack has been a disaster, ranking bottom-three in nearly every major category.

This echoes Kelly’s abbreviated NFL history as he was fired after three seasons as Eagles head coach (2013-15) and one dismal 2-14 year with the 49ers (2016). His college success at Oregon, UCLA, and Ohio State, never translated back to the pros.

Raiders Eye Interim Fix Amid Coaching Overhaul

With no interim named yet, quarterbacks coach and former Raiders OC Greg Olson emerges as the frontrunner to steady the team. Other staff options include passing game coordinator Scott Turner and tight ends coach Fred Walker. Expect an internal promotion during the bye week, with a potential outside hire in the offseason for the Raiders. And the 2025-26 campaign will mark another losing season for the Raiders, who are already way out of the playoff picture.
