The New York Giants’ 2025 season hit a new low on Sunday when they surrendered a 10-point fourth-quarter lead to the Detroit Lions, losing 34-27 in overtime on Jahmyr Gibbs’ 69-yard touchdown run on the very first play of the extra period. It marked the fifth time this year the Giants have blown a double-digit advantage- tying an NFL record- and dropped the team to a dismal 2-10. Defensive Coordinator Shane Bowen Dismissed

On Monday, interim head coach Mike Kafka announced the firing of defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, just two weeks after Brian Daboll was relieved of his duties.

Outside linebackers coach Charlie Bullen will serve as interim coordinator for the remainder of the season.

Bowen, 28, was hired by Daboll before the 2024 season to replace Wink Martindale. Expectations were high after Bowen’s defenses in Tennessee ranked among the league’s best against the run. Instead, the 2025 Giants defense has been historically bad, ranking 30th overall, allowing 27.8 points per game, and dead last in yards per carry allowed.

New York has now lost an NFL-high five games after leading in the fourth quarter, including becoming the first team since at least 1970 to blow an 18-point lead with six minutes remaining. All five double-digit leads lost this season have come on the road, where the Giants have dropped 12 straight dating back to last year, making it a franchise record.

Mike Kafka Explains the Bowen Firing

Kafka initially expressed confidence in Bowen after Sunday’s collapse but changed course after reviewing tape.

“I wanted to be calculated,” Kafka explained. “I didn’t want to make rash decisions. After watching the communication and the execution the last few weeks, today was the right time.”

Bullen, praised by Kafka for his detail, aggression, and production with the outside linebackers room, now inherits a unit facing the New England Patriots on Monday Night Football next week.

The Giants entered the season believed their expensive defensive line would carry them. Instead, repeated late-game meltdowns by the defense have turned what was supposed to be a strength into the primary reason for a lost season, and now cost Shane Bowen his job. New York is a far better team than their record states, but they will at least need another season to figure it all out.
