Qualifier Terence Atmane Beats World No. 7 Holger Rune to Reach Maiden ATP Masters 1000 Semifinals

Terence Atmane became the first qualifier to reach the Cincinnati Open semi-finals since 2015.

A new star is rising in the men’s tennis as the 23-year-old qualifier, Terence Atmane reached the semifinals of the 2025 Cincinnati Open. The Frenchman outclassed No. 7-seed Holger Rune in straight sets to claim the top-four ticket in the ATP 1000 Masters event for the first time. It has been a dream campaign for Atmane, who surprised top names en route to semifinals in Ohio.

Terence Atmane Claim Back-to-Back Top-10 Win to Reach Cincinnati Open Semifinal

Terence Atmane had only five ATP tour wins before arriving in Cincinnati and the 23-year-old stunned top players in his dream campaign. The Frenchman was ranked No. 136 and participated in the qualifying event. Atmane arrived in Ohio with no clothing sponsor, and no agent.

The 23-year-old qualifier didn’t get panic in his quarterfinal game. He made a flourish start to the match and won the opening set 6-2. The second set was tricky in the beginning and Atmane led 3-2 but Rune equalized few minutes later. It was the final game for Rune as Atmane didn’t allow the Dane in the set. The Frenchman won remaining three games with powerful left handed serve and forehand.

Terence Atmane became the first qualifier to reach the Cincinnati Open semi-finals since 2015. Recently, he beat World No. 4 Taylor Fritz to get his biggest win of career. The 23-year-old defeated Flavio Cobolli, and Joao Fonseca during the career-best campaign.

The French qualifier will now get the toughest task in the semifinals. Atmane will face the world No. 1 and the defending champions Jannik Sinner who is on a remarkable winning streak on hard court. Atmane has doubled his career ATP tour wins and he surged to top 70 now. Recently, Victoria Mboko surprised tennis fans with a maiden WTA title and now, Atmane brought attention on him.
