Premier League Top 5 Race: Champions League Spots and Bragging Rights Up for Grabs

Following an Almost Decided Top Two, Fight for the Rest Three Spots Define the Thrilling Conclusion to the Premier League Season.

The Premier League season is coming to a close soon. The top five race is reaching a dramatic climax with just two matches remaining for the teams to be played. Multiple teams are competing fiercely for Champions League qualification, European glory, and bragging rights.

Liverpool have already secured top spot, winning the Premier League this season. Arsenal may be close at securing their spot in second place. However, mathematically they are still not out of danger as Newcastle United, Manchester City, Chelsea, and even Nottingham Forest remain locked in a tense battle along with the Gunners.

Only four of these teams will finish in the Champions League places.

Newcastle’s Surge

Newcastle United have bolstered their top-five ambitions in recent times. However, they gained the momentum especially after their 2-0 win over Chelsea in their latest match. This has moved them to third place with 66 points.

Goals from Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes were pivotal in this win. They also capitalised on Manchester City’s draw against Southampton during the same matchweek.

Chelsea’s Dilemma

Chelsea are currently sitting in fifth position with 63 points. With that, they now face a unique situation. If they win the Europa Conference League final against Real Betis and also finish in the Premier League’s top five, UEFA rules might allow them to choose between Champions League and Europa League participation.

However, to have that choice, they will have to ensure, they don’t lose anymore games and stay the course in the remaining games. That may not be easy for the Blues considering their next two matches are against Manchester United and Northern Forest.

Manchester City and Nottingham Forest’s Challenge

Manchester City ended their latest game in a goalless draw against Southampton in their last match. Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest drew 2-2 with relegated Leicester City in the same matchweek.

These results have brought Man City to fourth and Forest to seventh position. Despite both teams are not far from securing European football, tensions are rising at both camps. They have only two games remaining to make it work.

Remaining Fixtures

Arsenal, in second place with 68 points, will host Newcastle United and then visit Southampton.
Manchester City, fourth with 65 points, face Bournemouth at home and Fulham away.
Chelsea’s final games are against Manchester United are and Nottingham Forest on the road.
Aston Villa, in sixth place, but tied with Chelsea at 63 points, will play Tottenham Hotspur at home and Manchester United away
Nottingham Forest will conclude their season against West Ham on the road and Chelsea at home.

European Qualification Scenarios

Five Premier League teams were already guaranteed Champions League spots due to England’s strong UEFA coefficient. However, with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur in Europa League final, six Premier League teams are now guaranteed to qualify for Champions League next season. Further teams down the table will qualify for Europa League and Conference League.
