Portugal vs Denmark Preview

The Danes started the first leg on the front foot and missed a couple of opportunities to take the lead before Renato Veiga handed a penalty by handling a Christian Eriksen shot inside the penalty area. Before the Manchester United midfielder could step up to take the penalty, his former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo had a word with Diogo Costa and the goalkeeper successfully saved the penalty stopping the hosts from taking the lead.

Eriksen was denied yet again in the first half as his goal-bound effort was blocked frustrating the hosts who felt that they should have scored at least 3 goals in the first 45 minutes of the two-legged tie. Within 10 minutes of coming onto the pitch, Rasmus Hojlund opened the scoring on the evening continuing his new-found goalscoring touch and the Manchester United striker would also be hoping to score in the second leg.

Portugal

Portugal topped their group consisting of teams like Croatia, Scotland, and Poland which underlines the strength of the squad and the Ronaldo-led side would be hoping to take inspiration from that after a dull showing against the Danes in Copenhagen. The Portugal midfield was completely dominated and possibly, the introduction of Bernardo Silva could help Martinez’s men turn around the tide during the second leg of the fixture.

Denmark

Denmark finished second in their group courtesy of two early wins as they failed to win any of their last four matches, finishing with 8 points from 6 matches. The presence of Eriksen in the midfield does give the Danes a sense of control which could be beneficial in Lisbon as the Selecao would come out all guns blazing in order to qualify for the finals of the ongoing Nations League campaign.

Portugal vs Denmark Player Picks

Cristiano Ronaldo (To Score a Goal @ -110 as per MGM Bet): The leading goalscorer in the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League campaign, Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 5 goals in the group stage but blanked against the Danes in Copenhagen. The 40-year old has the backing of his manager and would be looking to repay the trust put in him during the second leg in Lisbon.

Christian Eriksen (To Score a Goal @ +525 as per MGM Bet): The most capped player for Denmark, Christian Eriksen had a big impact in the first leg constantly troubling the Portuguese defense and making a key pass which resulted in the only goal of the first match. While the Danish playmaker did miss the penalty and hit the free-kick straight into the goalkeeper’s gloves, the Manchester United midfielder has a great chance of scoring in Lisbon.

Portugal vs Denmark Match Prediction

Denmark head coach Brian Reimer earned his first win with the Danes and chose the perfect match to do so and another win or even a draw would help the Red and Whites qualify for the Nations League finals scheduled for the first half of June.

Our Final Prediction: A 2-2 draw with Denmark knocking out Portugal would be a match to remember for ages.
