Philadelphia Eagles Offensive Woes – Are Jalen Hurts and A.J. Brown at the Center of Their Problems?

The reigning Super Bowl Champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, have a major problem on their hands. The once dependable offensive unit that helped them secure the Vince Lombardi trophy last season has not looked like the same unit this season, despite retaining all the core players on that side of the ball.

If the Eagles are still leading the NFC East, most of the props deserve to go to the team’s defense. After starting the season 8-2, the Eagles have dropped 3 games in a row and have scored just 21 points against the Cowboys, 15 against the Bears, and 19 against the Chargers, respectively.

So, for a well-oiled machine that the Eagles were, what has gone wrong, and where does the blame fall? Let us explore what transpired before Philly started losing all these games.

A.J. Brown Raises Concerns with Lack of Opportunities

With the exception of the two-game stretch in between, where the Eagles lost to the Broncos and Giants in Weeks 5 and 6, Philadelphia kept winning games despite the offense not being up to standard.

One of the biggest letdowns this season has been running back Saquon Barkley’s performance. The former Giant took the league by storm in his very first year in Philly, but this season, he is nowhere near the top at his position, ranking 12th in the league in rush yards with 862, and averaging just 4 yards per carry.

But things only started to fall off after a couple of comments from wide receiver A.J. Brown went public. Brown made his discontent known regarding the lack of a properly functioning offense, in particular, his lack of targets.

Since then, Brown’s targets and receiving yards have gone up. For instance, the Eagles’ wideout has had 4 straight games of double-digit targets. In his last three games, Brown has recorded 100 or more receiving yards, but Philly has lost all three of those games.

Jalen Hurts Has Been Lackluster

Quarterback Jalen Hurts has also been less effective this season. Typically, he is best suited as a dual-threat player with the option to go on designed QB runs. That, however, has reduced significantly this season, whether that is intentional by the coaching team, or whether other dynamics, such as A.J. Brown wanting the ball more, have come into play, is not known. Regardless, Hurts rushing numbers are down nearly by half from the previous years.

Last year’s Super Bowl MVP has always thrived in a system where he hasn’t had to rely extensively on his arm. This time around, however, he has taken the aerial route, and that is more evident in the last three games, where he has attempted an average of 15 more passes, and as mentioned earlier, the Eagles have lost all three of those games.

As a result, it is difficult to just brush aside these factors and call the Eagles’ offensive struggles as just a mere coincidence. But if team dynamics are at play and at the center of the problem, it could end up costing the Eagles much more than just a game here or there.
