The Cincinnati Bengals are currently 4-9 and sitting third in the AFC North, 3 games behind the division leaders, the Pittsburgh Steelers. With just 4 games left for the regular season to end, their path to the playoffs is almost certainly over, and they look destined to miss out on postseason action for the third year in a row.

Dealing with that for the Bengals fanbase is already a tough pill to swallow. But, following franchise quarterback Joe Burrow’s latest media interaction, missing the playoffs may not be the biggest concern for the ‘Who Dey’ nation.

Joe Burrow Casts Doubt on Future

Cincinnati’s loss to Buffalo last week not only handed them their 9th loss of the season, but it has also almost entirely knocked them out of the playoffs. This season has been another wasted opportunity for the Bengals and Joe Burrow himself.

After having reached the Super Bowl in the 2021 season, Cincinnati followed that up with a loss in the AFC Championship game the following year. Since then, it has been all downhill, particularly in the case of Burrow, who has had to deal with a couple of long-term injuries.

In the 2023 season, the former number one overall pick missed the last 7 games of the season due to a wrist injury, and this year he missed 9 games due to turf toe injury. Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Burrow was asked whether his mindset and competitive fire have changed coming off an injury, and his response was certainly disturbing to hear.

“No, it certainly doesn’t change my desire to win,” said Burrow. “You know, if I want to keep doing this, I have to have fun doing it. You know, I’ve been through a lot, and if it’s not fun, then what am I doing it for?”

Joe Burrow’s presser today felt very reflective — and at times, a bit dark:

"If I want to keep doing this, I have to have fun doing it. I have been through a lot. If it's not fun, then what am I doing it for?"

Should Bengals Fans Be Worried?

While Burrow’s most recent comments should be interpreted with a grain of salt, there is no doubt that the 29-year-old has been putting some thought into his future. Injuries are a big part of a physical sporting league such as the NFL, and they take a massive toll on players’ bodies.

Going through surgeries, the rehab process, and everything else that comes with injuries is not the easiest thing to do for players, and if the level of excitement starts to wane, then early retirements are nothing new in this league. One of the best examples of this is the former Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, who walked away from the game at the young age of 29.

Additionally, in the case of Burrow, the Bengals’ O-line has been atrocious for a number of years. While Cincinnati has spent boatloads of money on signing Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, and Tee Higgins to extensive contracts, the Bengals have not managed to improve their O-line as well as their defense, leading to potentially three straight seasons of failure to get back to the postseason.

Whether Burrow’s latest comments are something to really worry about, only time will tell. But one thing is for sure, it is always concerning when a player of superstar status starts talking about the ‘fun’ element going missing from the game.
